Vince Young Trade Rumors: 10 Reasons He Will Never Find Another Home in the NFL

Eric BallFeb 8, 2011

The 2011 Tennessee Titans are going to look drastically different after a rocky past six months.

Jeff Fisher was the longest tenured coach in the NFL—not anymore.

Randy Moss was supposed to finally bring a top receiving threat to a vertically challenged one.

Didn’t happen.

And QB Vince Young, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2006 draft, was poised to lead the Titans to the promise land, much like his senior season at Texas.

How’d that turn out?

The Titans are now in rebuild mode after a 6-10 record, and Young is looking for a new team.

Some may argue that the downfall of the team is directly related to the failures of Young, and that’s the reason the league, so desperate for serviceable QBs, is looking past him.

Obviously there are red flags when a QB with a 30-17 can’t garner any interest.

Here are 10 reasons why Young will never find another home in the NFL.

10. Throwing Accuracy

After five years, it's clear that Young is simply not a very accurate QB.

His 58 percent career completion percentage tells you that. And his inability to throw the ball down the field has really hampered the Titans offense over the years.

The Titans may not have had the most prolific receivers, but Nate Washington is more than capable of hauling in a properly thrown streak route.

Young dinks and dunks, which is exposed in the film.

Defenses know they aren’t going to get beat by the arm of Young.

9. Stubbornness

Young attempted to bench himself in a ’09 game because of a sore knee.

He has butted head’s with teammates on numerous occasions. He doesn’t take booing well and he failed to master the off-field nuances that a franchise QB must learn.

Young walked on water at Texas and had never been questioned in his life. He never had to work hard for success.

The NFL is a job and Young doesn’t treat it like one. He is still relying on his God given ability to get by. Too bad that doesn’t cut it in the NFL.

It’s a harsh statement, but Young thinks he is better than he really is.

8. Couldn’t Get Along With One of the Top Coaches in the Sport

Brett Favre may have given people a million reasons not to like him, but his feuds with former head coach Brad Childress weren’t his fault. Childress tried to one-up the gunslinger and undermine his importance to the team despite flying halfway across the country to beg for his return.

Young, on the other hand, has neither the reputation of Favre nor legit excuses to make his feuds justifiable.

The immature QB was never able to earn the locker room’s respect, and Fisher was right there with them.
Young never was able to earn the trust of Fisher and he couldn't stand for his antics any longer.

Rarely had Fisher ever clashed with a player in his 16-year tenure as head coach. It was a modern day soap opera with Young.

Fisher thought he could have molded him into the Titans franchise QB by year five, but it just never happened.

7. The Death of Steve McNair

While the chilling details of how Steve McNair died may have clouded the memory of most NFL fans, people forget about the role McNair played with Young.

The biggest football mentor to Young acted as a smooth bridge between him and Fisher, and if McNair were alive today, it's possible Young and Fisher's relationship may be quite different.

The two players similarities were endless, and McNair was the one guy who could tell Young what it takes to be successful in the NFL, especially with his specific talents.

Both were big lumbering guys that could make just as many plays with their feet as they could with their arms.

There is no question that the sudden death of McNair has affected Young greatly.

6. Injuries

Young has injured his knee, ribs, thumbs, and ankles.

All have kept him off the field.

Whether it’s bad luck or an unwillingness to play with pain, the constant injuries are a red flag.

He missed all but three games in ’08, a quarter of the season in ’09 and half the season in ’10.

He has never been able to play a full season in his young career, so how do you expect him to stay healthy when he gets older?

5. Immaturity

The 27-year old simply hasn’t figured out how a player of his stature is supposed to act.

There were the pictures of him partying without a shirt and a big bottle of liquor found all over the Internet.

There was the fight at a Dallas strip club over a “Hook ‘em Horns” hand signal.

And, of course, throwing his shoulder pads into the stands after his home fans booed him. How did he apologize to Fisher?

A text message.

WTF indeed.

4. Reliance on Rushing the Ball

Make no mistake about it, Young’s best asset is scrambling and galloping for greener pastures.

But unless your name is Vick, it doesn’t work more than a few plays per game. NFL QBs have to stand in the pocket and be patient. Let the play develop instead of abandoning it after the first two options aren’t open.

It goes back to the hard headiness of Young. He needs to realize that scrambling around like he did at Texas isn’t nearly as effective at the pro level.

Five years later he still doesn’t get it.

3. Poor Decision Making Skills

The sample size is big enough to make some sound judgments on Young, and the results aren’t good.

He has a career QB rating of 75 and has thrown the exact same amount of TDs and INTs with 42. Add another 38 fumbles and this guy is not exactly who you trust with your franchise.

In his 2007 campaign he threw nine TDs and 17 INTs!

His career average of 6.8 yards per completion is well below the NFL average, and his 5.2 yards per rush isn’t the most efficient use of his greatest skill.

2. Not On Many Teams Radar

The Redskins need a QB, but they seem like the front-runner for Cam Newton.

The Cardinals are interested in Kevin Kobb and/or Mark Bulger—well, that's if Larry Fitzgerald gets him way.

Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Mallett and Jake Locker are all NFL ready and could start on Day 1.

Minnesota? Maybe, but isn’t Joe Webb just a more level headed and younger version of Young?

The starting QB options in the NFL are harder to find than you would expect.

1. One Of The Worst Reputations In The NFL

The league isn't stupid.

They have eyes and ears everywhere. The league knows all.

They know the intense migraine ahead if they put their neck on the line for Young.

The league knows Young's inability to earn the trust and respect of his teammates.

The league has seen the tape of Young's overthrows and poor decisions; they have seen the poor body language and the tantrums on the sideline.

They know of the shoulder pads into the stands incident, and they know about Young quitting on his team.

Young's past isn't a secret and teams looking for a QB are going to have either A.) bigger potential in a draft pick, or B.) a safer bet in another free agent QB.

The jury is out on Young.

He is guilty of not being able to handle the life and time's of a starting QB in the NFL.
