Aaron Rodgers: 10 Ways He Can Step Out of Brett Favre's Shadow
If you ask me, Aaron Rodgers already has stepped out of Brett Favre's shadow.
However, Brett is the current owner of virtually every NFL record for a QB.
Thus, he owns every Packer record as well.
But you can now put Aaron Rodgers in the discussion as to who is the best QB in Green Bay Packer history.
With that being said, here are the top 10 reasons Aaron Rodgers can move past Brett Favre, which will then put him right behind the legend Bart Starr.
10. Single Season Passing Records
1 of 10
For any QB who currently plays in the NFL, or for all future NFL QBs for that matter, Brett Favre's career stats/records are virtually untouchable.
However, they all play the same length of a regular season (hopefully it stays at 16 games) which allows room for some diversity.
As for single-season Packer records, Rodgers definitely has the ability to shove Favre aside and take over some Green Bay QB records.
If he can set the franchise record for most yards, TDs, least picks, and rating for a single season, then Rodgers will chip away at Favre's Packer legacy.
9. Improv and Versatility
2 of 10
When watching highlights of Favre and Rodgers, they have eerily similar improv decisions in times of duress.
The difference here is Rodgers seems more athletic and nimble on his feet.
With that being said, he has the uncanny ability to pull it down and run for it, while Favre remains the prototypical gunslinger.
The bottom line: Rodgers needs to continue his awe-inspiring play-making decisions both by running and passing for his dual threat ability.
8. Playoff Appearances
3 of 10
From 1968 through 1992, the Packers only managed two playoff appearances.
But once Brett Favre began his first full season as a starter in 1993, the Pack made 11 playoff appearances in his 15 years, including two Super Bowls, winning one of them.
At this time in his career, however, Aaron Rodgers has a lot to learn and accomplish.
With that being said, he has currently led the Pack to two consecutive playoff appearances (2009 and 2010).
As long as this consistency continues (and I expect it to), Rodgers will easily surpass Favre.
7. All-Pro/Pro Bowl Team Selections
4 of 10
Favre retired after 20 NFL seasons with 11 Pro Bowl selections and six All-Pro selections (three on first and second team).
In Rodgers's second season as the full-time starter, he was selected to the Pro Bowl (2009).
However, he was not selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl team; This could be a result of the concussion he suffered as well as his drop in TDs and increase in interceptions thrown.
Not to mention the NFC is stacked with QBs such as Drew Brees, Mike Vick and Matt Ryan.
But expect Rodgers to make a good amount of Pro Bowls and All-Pro teams by the time he retires.
6. NFL MVPs
5 of 10
Favre won three consecutive MVPs (1995 through 1997) and the worst Green Bay did in any of those years was losing the NFC Championship game in 1995.
It's arguably the second-best three year stretch in Packer history, which says a lot when compared to the legendary status of Green Bay Packer football.
Also, Favre has as many MVPs as Johnny Unitas, and one more than Joe Montana.
But if Rodgers receives one or two NFL MVPs, he will definitely be out of Favre's shadow. But then again, that is up to Packer fans everywhere as well as the national media.
5. Consecutive Starts
6 of 10
During the 16 years Brett spent in Green Bay, he started 253 consecutive games and became the "Iron Man" of the NFL.
Now, in order to build a legacy and have the opportunities to set records, make Pro Bowls, and win playoff games, a significant number of consecutive starts must be made.
Two hundred and fifty three with one team however is basically unreal, and most likely will never be broken.
As for Rodgers, he doesn't need to make over 250 consecutive starts to show his toughness.
But a number close to 100 would be solid, since that would equate to around six full seasons. And if he misses a start here or there to remain healthy, it shouldn't diminish his chances at Packer immortality.
4. Win a Second Super Bowl
7 of 10
Ironically both Favre and Rodgers won their Super Bowls in their sixth NFL season.
But Rodgers is technically only three years in after backing up Favre for his first three years.
And if Aaron manages to win one more regardless of whether or not he wins other individual awards, Favre will be a distant memory.
Not to mention this would put Rodgers at the NFL/Green Bay QB status of Bart Starr (Gives me goosebumps).
3. Once a Packer, Always a Packer
8 of 10
Some Packer fans still feel betrayed by Brett Favre, and they deserve to be angry about it.
I have a close friend who feels that way and he has every right to be.
And based on what Aaron Rodgers has been through since being drafted in 2005, he had to have seen what happened when Favre alienated himself from the Lambeau faithful.
Therefore, fully expect Rodgers to stay a Packer his entire career, not only because he and all of Green Bay want him to be, but after what happened with Favre, no fan/city deserves that kind of selfishness.
2. Retire When The Time Is Right
9 of 10
Previously mentioned was that Rodgers does need to remain a Packer for his career.
Well, there also comes a time when you NEED to retire and not damage your legacy.
Favre should have stayed retired after the 2007 season, much like people are now saying that Derek Jeter should retire from Major League Baseball.
There comes a time when no matter who you are, the cleats have got to come off for good. Therefore, we can only hope that Rodgers has learned from Favre's mistakes and will leave the game when the terms are right.
1. Maintain Professionalism
10 of 10
As important as the game of football is, it is still just a game.
On the field, Favre was an Iron Man, but his recent off-the-field accusations are what can diminish a reputation.
Even through the whole fiasco in Green Bay, Rodgers remained a professional and has continued to do so.
For that, he has earned much respect on and off the field, which does bode well in the future.
And at the end of the day, it is who you are as a person and not just your business accomplishments that matter.
