NFL Trade Rumors: Which Teams Have the Right Pieces To Deal for Kevin Kolb?
When the Eagles placed the franchise tag on Michael Vick, they decided on their future quarterback. Vick was going to be their guy and Kevin Kolb was either on the move or No. 2 on the depth chart.
The Eagles are currently listening to offers for the 26-year-old quarterback. Kolb probably won't be dealt until there is a new collective bargaining agreement, which may not happen anytime soon.
If you remember correctly, Donovan McNabb was traded at the beginning of April. If a new CBA is worked out then expect Kolb to be deal during the month of the draft as well. There may be offers now but things will heat up closer to the draft. The Eagles will wait for the best possible deal, which could mean it's going to be awhile.
Kevin Kolb wants to be a starter somewhere. The Eagles will try to honor his request while still trying to get the best possible deal. There are a few teams who have what it takes to get Kolb, but are they willing to make a deal?
Kolb is most likely to be traded for draft picks. But do teams feel he's worth a first or second round pick? Here's a list of potential trades that could go down for the quarterback.
10. Kolb and 3 Eagles Draft Picks for Panthers' 2011 No. 1 Pick
1 of 10
This deal is highly unlikely to happen, which is why it comes in at No. 10. There is still a possibility a move like this could be made, but do the Panthers believe Kolb is worth it?
New head coach Ron Rivera will want to gather his team and make a statement in his first year as a head coach. Jimmy Clausen is hardly going to help him. Rivera may want to make a move and get Kolb.
The Panthers are without a second round pick due to a trade with the New England Patriots last year (they traded it for quarterback Armanti Edwards, who is now a wide receiver). Rivera needs to rebuild this team, and you do that through the draft.
He could trade the top pick away and save a ton of money. In return the Panthers would pick up the Eagles' 2011 first and second pick as well as their 2012 third round pick. If you're trading for the No. 1 overall pick, you're going to have to give up a lot.
9. Kolb for Bills 2011 Second Round Pick and 2012 Fourth Round Pick
2 of 10
This deal is similar to the one the Eagles made when they traded away Donovan McNabb. The draft choices are alike but the teams are very different.
The Bills aren't in desperate need for a quarterback like a few other teams, but they could use a little insurance. Ryan Fitzpatrick had a breakout year, but the Bills aren't 100 percent sure he is the real deal. They're hoping it isn't going to be another 2007 Derek Anderson.
Trading for Kolb adds depth to the quarterback position and will challenge Kolb to fight for the starting role, something I believe he should do since he hasn't truly proven himself.
8. Kolb for Chad Henne
3 of 10
The Dolphins know they're stuck as the third-best team in their division unless they can improve their team. Finding a new quarterback is a possibility.
Chad Henne threw for over 3,000 yards in 2010 for the first time in his career. However, the Dolphins didn't go very far. You can have impressive stats, but if you don't win games then it doesn't matter.
Trading Henne for Kolb straight up would give the Dolphins a better passing quarterback, which is what they want, and gives the Eagles a decent backup. They know trading away Kolb will hurt their team. He is great insurance if Vick gets hurt, but Kolb has a lot of value meaning now is the time to trade him.
The Eagles get a more experience backup quarterback, and the Dolphins get a guy they can label as the face of their franchise. It might make Brandon Marshall happier as well.
7. Kolb for Panthers' 2011 Third and Fifth Round Pick and 2012 Second Round Pick
4 of 10
Since the Panthers don't have a second round pick, they'll have to get a little creative if they want to acquire Kolb. This trade is a little more practical than the one before.
Ron Rivera needs draft picks to make his team better for the future. But without a good quarterback leading his team, he won't get very far. Making this deal for Kolb puts the Panthers in a position to start winning games right away.
I highly doubt Rivera wants his first year as a NFL head coach to end like it did for Cam Cameron. That is why the Panthers must consider dealing for Kevin Kolb.
6. Kolb, Eagles' 2011 First Round Pick for Dolphins' First and Third Round Picks
5 of 10
The Dolphins would swap their No. 15 overall pick for the Eagles' No. 23 pick, plus they get Kolb. Of course that wouldn't be enough for the Eagles, so Miami would also give up its third round pick. Or they could give up a future pick. Either way they get what they really want, a quarterback.
The Eagles might not have any interest in Henne. Therefore, the Dolphins will need to work another deal if they want to obtain Kolb. These teams aren't too far from each other in the draft so a swap is a possibility. Other teams in dire need of a quarterback have top-10 picks. It would take much more than just Kolb to give up those picks.
Tony Sparano in on the hot seat and if the Dolphins don't improve their 7-9 record from 2010, he could be on his way out. Adding Kolb to the mix would certainly ease Sparano's mind.
5. Kolb and Eagles' 2011 First and Fourth Round Pick for Cards' First Round Pick
6 of 10
They asked for his thoughts, but how much say does Larry Fitzgerald have? They better listen to his input because if they don't please him, then Fitzgerald will be looking for a new team soon.
There's no question the Cardinals have problems at quarterback. They need to make a move to have a shot at competing in the weak NFC West division. Fitzgerald's first suggestion was to trade for Kevin Kolb. He knows that Kolb thrived throwing it to DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. If Kolb can get it to those guys, he can surely play pitch and catch with one of the best receivers in the league.
The Cardinals have the fifth overall pick. To trade that away, it's going to have to be a great deal. This proposal could work because they'll be improving a position of need and saving money in the process.
4. Kolb for 49ers' 2011 Second Round Pick and 2012 Fourth Round Pick
7 of 10
The 49ers have a big question mark at the quarterback position. Do they draft one at No. 7 or wait until a later round to develop one? Should they stick with Alex Smith and hope new head coach Jim Harbaugh can turn his game around? Or should they trade for Kevin Kolb?
Trading for Kolb is the best option. They'll give up their second round pick and toss Kolb into the mix with Smith. Kolb should win the job. The 49ers also get to keep the seventh overall draft pick which could fill a need elsewhere.
And if Harbaugh really wants to develop a young quarterback, then he can draft one in the fifth or sixth round. It's a huge risk for him to not make a move and rely on Alex Smith to get the job done.
3. Kolb for Titans' 2011 Second and Fourth Round Picks
8 of 10
Bud Adams made the decision to cut ties with Vince Young. Then a couple weeks later he shocked everyone and cut ties with head coach Jeff Fisher. Now Bud Adams has a new coach.
Like many expected, the Titans promoted within and made former offensive line coach Mike Munchak the new head coach. Munchak is now faced with the decision of getting a good deal for Vince Young and trying to find a new quarterback.
I highly doubt he wants Kerry Collins as his guy. Munchak stated in his press conference that change is coming. I don't see him taking the risk of drafting a quarterback with the eighth overall pick. The only way that happens is if Blaine Gabbert falls to the Titans.
Instead of taking a risk on a rookie quarterback, Munchak should take the risk on an experienced one. Kolb can come in, be the starter and improve Tennessee from its awful 6-10 record. All it takes is a couple of draft picks.
2. Kolb for Cardinals' 2011 Third Round Pick and 2012 First Round Pick
9 of 10
Ken Whisenhunt said Larry Fitzgerald isn't picking the new quarterback. Well that's obvious Ken, but you should at least listen to the guy. If the Cardinals don't improve the quarterback position, Larry Fitzgerald will not re-sign with them.
Arizona needs to keep its franchise player happy and trade for Kevin Kolb. With this deal the Cardinals get to keep their first two round picks, which could be impact players right away. They'll have to sacrifice next year's first round pick, but it's a smart idea. They could easily make it to the playoffs with Kolb next year.
The NFC West isn't very good (a 7-9 team won the division). Adding Kolb will improve the 5-11 record, and if they can get a run game going, the Cards could find themselves as leaders of their division. This can only happen if they improve the quarterback position.
1. Kolb for Vikings' 2011 Second Round Pick and 2012 Fourth Round Pick
10 of 10
This is the best option in my opinion. The Eagles make a similar deal to the Donovan McNabb trade and get a draft pick for this year and next year. And the Vikings get a good quarterback.
Brett Favre isn't coming back. All of Minnesota could show up at Brett's home in Mississippi and it still wouldn't work. The Vikings need to do something to replace him. Is Tarvaris Jackson or Joe Webb the answer? No, neither one will save their franchise.
Minnesota doesn't have to give up too much in this deal. The Vikings keep their No. 12 pick in the draft, which will become a defensive playmaker, and they get a quarterback. The Eagles may want more than this for Kolb, but it will be really hard for teams to do since age is really the only sure thing with Kolb.
Teams know they're going to get a young, experienced quarterback in Kolb. They don't know if he can be a strong starting quarterback. The reward outweighs the risk, and that is why teams will be after Kolb.
The Vikings are the best team for Kolb to go to. He will start right away and be surrounded by tons of talent.
