BYU Who? How About Some Love For The Not-So-Little Guy?

Bryan GonzalezSep 21, 2008

For the second straight week, the BYU Cougars shut out their opponent at Lavell Edwards Stadium. This week it was a 44-0 beating of Wyoming. That means that BYU has scored 103 unanswered points in the past two games.

I realize that the two teams that the Cougars played weren't exactly stellar, in fact they were pretty bad. But I don't care who you are or who you're playing, when you score that many points and don't let the other team score at all, it deserves some respect!

Even though BYU head football coach Bronco Mendenhall wont say that it is complete garbage that the Cougars are overlooked by just about everyone in Bristol (ESPN), I have no problem saying that.

I love watching SportsCenter and I've always loved the college football programs, but every week I'm loosing more and more respect for the so-called experts. I couldn't even find a clip on espn.com about the game! What kind of crap is that?

BYU is a top 15 team and they were just about left out of the show. Now, I don't know about you, but that is wrong. Especially when BYU is making a serious push to a BCS game. Quarterback Max Hall has 15 touchdowns already and is just barely on the Heisman list, then BYU's defense shuts out two opponents in a row and it isn't even a blip on the national radar.

Well, it's a cryin' shame, but it is what the Cougars and the rest of the non-BCS schools have to deal with. Until, of course, another mid-tier team beats a ranked BCS team, like Boise St. did this weekend to then-No. 17 Oregon (which, by the way, only dropped three spots in the polls).

TCU will no doubt deserve some much-needed respect if it is able to take down Oklahoma next week. Utah already has a good win over Michigan in the "Big House." And Boise St., as I mentioned before, handed Oregon its first loss of the season.

I just think its about time that the big boys give respect where respect is due. The normal teams in the normally powerful conferences are just not that good anymore. The better teams in the country are noticeably better than the bad ones this year, but the thing is that a few of those really good teams aren't in a BCS conference.

BYU, Utah TCU, Tulsa, Boise St., and Ball St. are all undefeated, and it's wrong to think that they do not deserve to be mentioned with the former powerhouse schools of college football.
