Super Bowl 2011: Ozzy, Eminem, Bieber and the Top 10 Commercials
Most people watch the Super Bowl for the game. Others watch it because it is now an accepted social responsibility of being an American. And then there are the groups that watch for what happens during the stoppages of the game—the commercials. So while it's fun to break down every play and call made during the game, it's way more relaxing to get lost in the 30-second spots that companies spend millions of dollars to make and show.
Here we recap the top ten commercials from last night's big game:
10) Bud Light: Hack Job
1 of 10This was the first commercial of the Super Bowl, and was very typical and straightforward. A joke on "Extreme Makeover," the commercial is simple and funny.
9) E-Trade Baby: Tailor
2 of 10I usually am a big fan of the E-Trade commercials, but I didn't find this one as funny as some of the older ones. Still, a baby talking about financial advice while making smart jokes is always enjoyable to watch.
8) Bud Light: Product Placement
3 of 10Ever wonder why certain companies are always featured on the same show (the Apple Computer in "Seinfeld"?) Watch any soap opera and you'll see some of the most egregious product placements. In this commercial, at least it seems that the product placement is for a good cause.
7) Doritos: House Sitting
4 of 10That's right folks. If you want to bring something back to life, try Doritos. Or your nearest local hospital.
6) Best Buy: Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber
5 of 10As a fan of Bieber, I'd honestly put this commercial up higher if I knew I wouldn't get tons of comments trashing the commercial solely for the fact that he's in it. But there's a great parallel between Ozzy and Bieber, both are funny, and Bieber makes fun of himself at the end (as the older guy). It's a very funny commercial, and not something I expected out of Best Buy.
5) Snickers: Richard Lewis and Roseanne Barr
6 of 10Similar to the "E-Trade" commercial, it's a similar ad campaign with a whiny celebrity being calmed down by a Snickers. I didn't think it was as funny as the Betty White Snickers commercial, but as a fan of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," I loved seeing Richard Lewis.
4) Teleflora: Faith Hill
7 of 10Remember guys: Sometimes it's not always the best idea to write what's in your heart.
3) CareerBuilder.com: Chimps
8 of 10An old concept, but one I thought was hilariously done. Animals—especially monkeys—are always great for commercials, and CareerBuilder.com has used them better than any company for years.
2) Bridgestone: Reply All
9 of 10Great commercial. A mistake all of us have made before.
1) Chrysler: Eminem
10 of 10This commercial was incredibly well-done. While the rest of the commercials on this list are humorous, this one takes an entirely different tone. Whether it was the gospel singers, the "Lose Yourself" in the background or Eminem's "This is the Motor City, This is What We Do" line, the commercial sent chills down our collective backs. Eminem repped Detroit and the American car industry big time.
So—which commercials do you think were the best, or should have been on the list?
