NFL Trade Rumors: Vince Young and 10 Players On the Move in the Offseason
The Super Bowl has come and gone, and all 32 NFL teams are now looking to bolster their roster in the offseason. All have holes to fill, whether they need a quarterback, a wide receiver, or a few linemen so the quarterback does not get sacked 10 times a game.
For those who would prefer to look for a free agent at these positions, those teams are in luck, since there are many quality players who are sick of where they reside now, or just need a change of scenery to get their careers back on track.
While there will be many players on the move during this offseason no matter what happens with the collective bargaining agreement, here are 10 that will be on a different team next season.
10. Larry Fitzgerald
1 of 10
I projected before the season that Fitzgerald would have an off year, simply because of the quarterback problems. Once they put John Skelton in though, he looked like the Larry Fitzgerald of old and had another great season. However, the quarterback problems remain, as evident by his lobbying to bring Kevin Kolb to Arizona.
It will be tough for the Cardinals to hang on to his contract, since it’s clear that they are going to be rebuilding. Trading Fitzgerald could help bring in great pieces to work with in the future, and even though he might want to be a Cardinal throughout his career, I’m sure he would like to win too, and he will not do it there.
9. Logan Mankins
2 of 10
How a guy plays in nine games and still makes the Pro Bowl is beyond me. Nonetheless, when he does play, Mankins has proven that he is one of the top offensive linemen in the league. The issues that he had with the Patriots in the offseason makes it clear he’s not coming back.
Many teams would love to add this guy into their roster, but there is the possibility that he could have the franchise tag put on him. Quite frankly, I see no chance of this happening. The Patriots have other issues to worry about this offseason, such as re-signing other pieces of the offensive line and bolstering the defense, so they might as well let Mankins go.
8. Ronnie Brown
3 of 10
Both Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are free agents heading into the offseason, and the Dolphins may or may not re-sign one. Ricky Williams does not have much left in the tank, and unless he signs a one-year deal, the Dolphins won’t keep him.
Brown is a trickier story. He should be at his peak right now, but instead only averaged 3.7 yards a carry this year, and if anything he proved he cannot be the sole running back option for a team. Most mock drafts have the Dolphins taking Mark Ingram, and I think Dolphins’ management will realize that having half of the R&R Express could be worse than having none of it.
7. Kevin Kolb
4 of 10
There’s a small chance that he stays on the Eagles if they promise him the job in 2012 after Michael Vick is done. However, Kolb has already requested a trade if they keep Vick around, and there will be many teams willing to trade for him.
The question is not if Kolb will leave Philadelphia, but where he will land. Arizona, Tennessee, and even Jacksonville are possibilities. You have to limit his options to where he could easily win a starting battle, and somewhere like Arizona may be the best bet as long as they keep Fitzgerald.
6. Steve Smith
5 of 10
Like the Cardinals, the Carolina Panthers are in full rebuilding mode, and on top of that they have the worst starting QB in the league right now. Steve Smith is 31, and certainly does not want to be part of a rebuilding project at this stage of his career.
Factor the above in with the fact that he barely passed the 500 yard mark in receiving and there’s no question he’s gone. Any team that needs a veteran receiver will jump at the opportunity to land him, and it may help him revive his career if he’s with the right quarterback.
5. Albert Haynesworth
6 of 10
The only thing that might keep a move from happening here is the sheer size of the contract. No one in their right mind will pay Haynesworth even $50 million right now, let alone $100. He won’t be on the Redskins next season, and if the Redskins have to eat some of the contract to get rid of him, they will.
Would any other team dare pick up Haynesworth and give him a shot? The team will have to have a great coaching staff and keep Haynesworth on a tight leash if they want to get any production out of him.
4. Roy Williams
7 of 10
When Roy Williams was brought onto the Dallas Cowboys, he was projected to be their go-to receiver. Now, after getting about 500 yards the past two seasons, he has become the third option behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.
Unlike the earlier receivers on the list, Williams was never an elite receiver for multiple years, so the market won’t be as great for him. With the right team he could be a formidable number two option, but that’s all you can hope for with him. At 29, he should be hitting his peak, but instead he seems to be heading to obscurity.
3. Kyle Orton
8 of 10
Tim Tebow is the Denver Broncos’ quarterback moving forward, which means their current starter, Kyle Orton, is done there. Orton is a very good passer, as we saw this past year, but the question of whether he’s a good quarterback is a much more difficult one to answer.
Nonetheless, many teams will see the passing yards he put up this year and gladly sign him to a deal for a year or two, at least until they can find a quarterback of the future that they like. That will likely be Orton’s legacy, holding the fort until an elite quarterback is ready to take over.
2. Vince Young
9 of 10
With the firing of Jeff Fisher, it remains just as likely that Vince Young will be gone as well, even though it was originally thought that it would be one or the other. There’s no question that Young has the tools to be a great quarterback, but lacks maturity and badly needs a change of scenery.
Where would Young end up? Many have him projected to go to the Vikings, and it’s a move that could make sense. Leslie Frazier will not take nonsense from Young, and they have more than enough offensive talent to help him get adjusted.
1. Donovan McNabb
10 of 10
The Donovan McNabb era ended up lasting only one season as he was benched for Rex Grossman, of all people, before the season was even over. Combine that with the issues between McNabb and the Shanahans and it’s clear that he will be in a different uniform next season.
The only issue for McNabb, aside from the contract, is that he did not have a good season with Washington, and at 34 he doesn’t have that much left. His best bet might be to join a team that’s looking to groom a quarterback on the bench for a year or two. The San Francisco 49ers are a top possibility, as Vernon Davis seems to love the idea of bringing the QB on board.
Hopefully he will actually be playing somewhere in 2011 and not sitting on the bench, wherever that may be.
