Those tears of joy were well deserved. Green Bay overcame myriad season-ending injuries during the regular season, which included starting running back Ryan Grant (ankle), starting tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) and starting linebacker Nick Barnett (wrist).
It is simply incredible that a professional football team could win a world championship after suffering those devastating injuries.
However, the Packers refused to hang their heads. They had one goal in mind from the first snap of the season: win a title.
Through 14 regular-season games, the Packers were faced with what were essentially two sudden-death games in order to qualify for the playoffs. They defeated the New York Giants in Week 16, 45-17, and followed that up with a 10-3 win over their archrivals, the Chicago Bears, in Week 17.
Mike McCarthy's squad entered the playoffs as the No. 6 seed in the NFC with a first-round matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Green Bay walked away with a 21-16 victory.
The next test was a tough matchup with the No. 1 seed Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome, where the Falcons had been seemingly unbeatable over the last two seasons. The Packers passed that test with flying colors, earning a 48-21 win.
The final obstacle facing Green Bay was a third game against the hated Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. They waltzed out of enemy territory with a 21-14 triumph.
Then came the biggest game in the life of every player and coach on the Green Bay staff. Super Bowl XLV against the Steelers and their seemingly impenetrable defense.
In a game that came down to the final 50 seconds, the Packers held Ben Roethlisberger and Co. to one final play. On fourth down, Roethlisberger threw a deep ball down the left side of the field that fell incomplete. Green Bay had won.
Through more significant injuries than any other team and through what can be considered five straight playoff games, the Packers did it—they won the biggest game of them all.
The Lombardi Trophy is headed back to its rightful home—Title Town.
