Jadeveon Clowney Rumor: No. 1 Prospect To Visit University of Oregon Campus?

Nathan LoweryFeb 5, 2011

Update 2/6/11: Unfortunatley Duck fans this rumor is not true. Clowney was not in Eugene this weekend. According to multiple sources Clowney was playing in a basketball game for South Pointe and attended his Senior Football Banquet later on Saturday.

According to Sports Illustrated and Oregon.247, the nation's No. 1 prospect, DE Jadeveon Clowney of South Pointe High School in South Carolina, has been rumored to be taking a visit to the University of Oregon.

The 6'6" 240 lb. Clowney is the consensus No. 1 prospect in the nation and is considering South Carolina, Alabama, Clemson and now apparently Oregon. Clowney will announce his decision on February 14.

This is just a rumor and could or could not be true, but if Clowney is taking a visit to Oregon, then that would be huge for the Ducks.

First off, if Clowney is indeed taking the visit to Oregon, I see no reason why he wouldn't sign with the Ducks. They have space on the line open for him, so he could be starting Day 1. They have a position for him—Nick Allioti's hybrid DE position, a mix of DE and OLB, both of which Clowney could play.

And just like with recent Oregon signee DeAnthony Thomas, why would a player of Clowney's calibre take a visit if he didn't plan on signing with the Ducks? And Oregon did just play in the National Championship game, and almost won. If Clowney signs with the Ducks, he will be Oregon's highest signee since Haloti Ngata, the No. 2 prospect in the nation signed back in 2002.

Secondly, if Clowney does visit Oregon, but doesn't sign with the Ducks, Oregon still wins really. If the No. 1 prospect in the nation visits Oregon, that means more top recruits will start to take notice and sign with the Ducks.

And finally, if Clowney doesn't visit Oregon and this was all just a hoax, then Oregon loses nothing.

Once again, this is just a rumor, one that I did not make up at all. You can check out the article.
