What We Learned From College Football Week 4
SEC has a lot of good teams
LSU 26 Auburn 21
Before Saturday’s game, the home team won each of the previous eight matchups. Despite that, No. 6 LSU still managed to leave Jordan-Hare Stadium with a comeback win over No. 10 Auburn.
It was an epic matchup between two perennial SEC powerhouses. Meanwhile, No. 3 Georgia goes west, as far west as it has gone to play a regular season game since 1960, and defeats Arizona State 27 to 10. Knowshon Moreno rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns. No. 4 Florida trounces Tennessee 30 to 6. No. 9 Alabama downs Arkansas 49 to 14.
Terrelle Pryor can play
Ohio State 28 Troy 10
The Ohio State freshman, making his first start went 10 for 16 for 139 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 66 yards. More importantly, he led the flat No. 13 Buckeyes to a win. Meanwhile, former starter Todd Boeckman threw one pass. It was incomplete and he was booed heavily by the smallest crowd in Ohio Stadium in six years.
It’s ain’t easy being Cinderella
North Carolina State 30 East Carolina 24
After upsetting then-ranked Virginia Tech and West Virginia, No. 15 East Carolina got a taste of reality. Not the realization they are a poor football team, which they aren’t, but the realization they aren’t perfect. That’s what they needed to be in order to crash the BCS party. A fumble on their first possession in overtime caused ECU to suffer early season heartbreak.
BYU is good
BYU 44 Wyoming 0
How does No. 14 Brigham Young follow up a 59 to 0 drubbing of UCLA? How about a 44 to 0 drubbing of Wyoming. Wyoming isn’t very good and neither is UCLA, but even Penn State allowed Coastal Carolina to score 10 points. The Cougars have won 14 straight. Their next game is October 3rd at Utah State.
Spartans bring in a Ringer
Michigan State 23 Notre Dame 7
Javon Ringer rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries in Michigan State 23 to 7 victory over the Fighting Irish. His longest rush of the day went for 63-yards and set up his second one-yard TD run. He may be the best back in the country.
What do Charlie Weis and Notre Dame’s offense have in common?
Michigan State 23 Notre Dame 7
Answer: they both have trouble getting up and down the field. The anemic Irish managed only 255 yards in 70 plays. Worse, the Irish rushed for only 15 yards in 22 attempts. Jimmy Clausen threw two interceptions and rushed for a negative 31 yards. Notre Dame also couldn’t capitalize on 14 Spartan penalties.
Never hurts to have a lot of QB’s when your QBs hurt
Boise State 37 Oregon 32
No. 17 Oregon, already down a starting quarterback, saw their backup, Jeremiah Masoli, concussed. True freshman Chris Harper was ineffectual behind center. Ergo, they used freshman QB Darron Thomas. The Ducks had hoped to redshirt him. Needless to say, the Ducks lose at rare one at Autzen.
Chase is in the Heisman chase
Missouri 42 Buffalo 21
Tigers’ Chase Daniel passed for a career-high 439 yards and set a Big 12 record with 20 consecutive completions. No. 5 Missouri played sloppy but got the win.
