Friday Night Fights: Bryan Vera Upsets Sergio Mora In Main Event

Live results will be posted for this week's edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights beginning at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The main event features Sergio Mora and Bryan Vera in a 10-round middleweight bout. This is Mora's first fight since earning a controversial draw against Shane Mosley in September.

Opening bout: Charles Hatley (14-0) vs. Chris Chatman (9-1)

Round 1- Chatman comes out in southpaw stance and presses the action early. Hatley has zebra styled trunks on. Hatley opens with a combination and drops Chatman early in the round. Hatman begins to unload on Chatman, who is on wobbly legs. With over a minute left, Chatman is lucky he’s still in this fight. He has already been hit by 28 out of 57 power shots. Chatman has a short comeback with 30 seconds to go, but Hatley is still connecting clean. Hatley 10-8

Round 2- Punch stats show Hatley landing 35 out of 89 punches in the first round. Chatman comes out in the second and dictates the pace early on with constant forward movement and pressure. Good back and forth action for the first two minutes of the round. Hatley is still landing the cleaner shots. Chatman is one tough fighter. Hatley lands a left hook to end the round. Hatley 10-9

Round 3- Hatley falls near the ropes as Chatman continues coming forward. Chatman switches from conventional stance to southpaw stance. He is making a comeback, but he looks a little winded. Hatley lands some shots as Chatman slows down. This is a good comparison round for Chatman, and he should get it on the scorecards. Chatman 10-9

Round 4- Chatman comes out early again, and both fighters fall near the ropes. Interesting stat shows Chatman being 4-1 against unbeaten fighters. Chatman lands a nice right hand with half the round left. His pressure is working well in the round. Hatley hasn’t been throwing enough punches in this round to make his opponent think twice about coming forward. Chatman 10-9

Round 5- Hatley is trying to measure the distance early and looking to land a right hand. Chatman’s stance is all over the place. Hatley having a better round, but Chatman is still coming forward. Hatley took advantage of Chatman’s wide punches and seems to have won the round. Hatley 10-9

Round 6- Both fighters are still trading back and forth. Chatman lands a good shot on Hatley while he goes against the ropes. Hatley keeps firing, but a lot are missing. Hatley’s punches seem to be doing more damage, and it’s probably winning him the fight. Hatley 10-9

Round 7- Chatman is relentless early on, but Hatley is the one landing the blows. Same pattern continues with half the round to go. Chatman lands a bunch of good shots against the ropes, but it was the only success he had in the round. Close round to score.Chatman 10-9

Round 8- It’s the final round of an entertaining fight. Scorecards may be interesting. Referee calls a halt to put a Hatley’s mouthpiece back in. Chatman lands a hard straight left and Hatley goes down. This is huge for Chatman. It may have won him the fight. Hatley looks in trouble with 40 seconds to go. Chatman throws to the body and head and landing. Hatley falls against the ropes with 10 seconds left. Great finish to a very good fight. Chatman 10-8

TOTAL: 75-75 Draw

Judges score it 77-73 Hatley, 75-75, 75-75 for a majority draw.

Main Event: Sergio Mora (22-1-2) vs. Bryan Vera (17-5)

Round 1- The bell rings, and the two former Contender contestants meet in the middle of the ring. Mora comes out throwing the four jabs. Vera charges at Mora and tries to land a flurry against the ropes. Mora is still feeling Vera out, and is losing the round so far. Vera lands a clean combination standing in the pocket. He lands a left hand and Mora nods. Mora ends round with a three punch combination. Good first round. Vera 10-9

Round 2- Both come out and fall into a clinch and against the ropes. Vera lands good body punches and Mora goes against the ropes. It has a similar pattern to the first round. Vera lands a good left hook on Mora, and Mora answers. Good right hand landed by Vera. This is a tough fight for Mora so far, but he lands a left hook late in the round. It’s another close round. Vera 10-9

Round 3- Mora seems to have found a rhythm early on in this round. Vera is still scoring with body shots and Mora waves him in. Vera answers with a head and body combination, and Mora smiles. Punch stats in this round show Vera landing 11 of 42 and Mora landing 3-32. Vera is looking good in this round. This is starting to feel like a bad style match-up for Mora. Vera ends the round with a flurry and is up three rounds on my scorecard. Vera 10-9

Round 4- Vera should be looking to land more left hooks in this round. He scored well with it in the previous rounds going to the body and head of Mora. Both fighters trade inside for the early part of the round. Mora lands a clean left hook inside. Mora takes a left hand by Vera late in the round. This is a close fight to score. Every round could have gone either way. Mora 10-9

Round 5- Mora comes out trying to establish the jab early again. Vera lands a right hand inside and than a sweeping left. Mora falls into a clinch and lands a left hook. This is turning into a great fight. Lot’s of action everywhere the fight goes. Mora tries to land a right cross and uppercut but misses. Vera comes back with a right hand to the body. With 30 seconds to go, both fight from the clinch. Mora ends the round with body punches as well as Vera. It’s another close round in an exciting fight. Mora 10-9

Round 6- Vera starts the second half of the fight with a double jab and misses. Mora finally throws a punch 30 seconds in and follows up with a bunch of jabs. Mora is really throwing the jab to both the body and head. Vera unloads on Mora against the ropes, but none of them land clean. Vera lands a left hook; the best punch of the round. Punch stats show Mora landing 92 of 397 and 99 of 444 for Vera. Vera takes it to Mora late in the round and does some good work. A cut opened up on the left eye of Mora. Vera 10-9

Round 7- Mora begins the round with a left hook and a jab. Mora looks over and tells Teddy Atlas, “Teddy watch this.” Mora leans against ropes and Vera tries to add up the points. Vera touches Mora with the jab and falls into a clinch. Punches through round 7 see Mora landing 108 and Vera landing 123. Vera ends the round with a flurry. Mora is cut over the right eye now. Vera 10-9

Round 8- Right eye cut determined by clash of heads and left eye cut by punch. This could be an upset in the making if the judges have it scored for Vera. Every round has been close. Mora is fighting well in this round but gets caught with a left hand. He lands a left of his own. Mora’s trunks seem to be falling down. Vera looks determined and tries to land a right hand. Vera is looking good in this round. Vera 10-9

Round 9- Power punches through eight rounds find Vera landing 116 to 96 for Mora. Vera lands a nice sweeping right hand, and follows up with two jabs. Mora does some good body work inside. Mora looks very determined in this round and fires away to the body of Vera. It’s a better round for Mora, and he should get it on the scorecards. Mora 10-9

Round 10- First 30 seconds see both fighters trading shots inside but nothing big. Vera lands a right hand and follows up with another but misses. He fires it again and lands it. Mora is boxing well with half the round to go. Both fighters look tired, and they should be. It’s been a very good fight. Mora lands two left hooks late in the round and lands a third to end the combination. Vera is bleeding over his left eye, and the bell rings to end the fight. Mora 10-9

TOTAL: 96-94 Vera. Teddy Atlas has it 95-94 for Vera.

 Judges score it 96-94 Mora, 96-94 Vera, 96-94 Vera. Vera wins by split decision!
