Is There Enough Orange Power in A Power Conference?

Brett PetersSep 20, 2008

Is it a surprise that the two most popular things ever to come out of Oklahoma State Football in my opinion is Barry Sanders and Mike Gundy’s You Tube rant? Throughout my long tenure as a fan I have yet to remember anything that has given the Cowboys the amount of national exposure as those two things. In a conference dominated by exciting and fantastic offenses, where do the Cowboys stand up?

As I see it the Cowboys will need to continue to try and establish the running game under Kendall Hunter and the offensive line. Now I know that quarterback Zac Robinson and new star wide receiver Dez Bryant have build a connection though the air but I do have a point here. My point is to keep Chase Daniel (Missouri), Sam Bradford(Oklahoma), Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) and Colt McCoy (Texas) off the field. And yes the Cowboys will have to face 4 of the top 5 Big 12 quarterbacks this year. Oklahoma State will need to burn clock and score points to give them a chance to compete towards the end of games. Through the first 3 games they were on the field with inferior opponents that over 4 quarters could not match up. I anticipate this being the case with the next game against Troy in a clear revenge match. The home field advantage will be enough for the Cowboys to put up points against Troy and that will keep the defense irrelevant.

I hate to say this but being a realist I think that the Cowboys will finish 4th in the Big 12 South Division. Their schedule is not a favorable one with the exception of a home game against down and out Texas A&M and “why am I in the Big 12” Iowa State. The defense that has played decently thus far will be dissected and exposed by quarterbacks that do that to pretty much everyone. I can roughly predict a seven game winning season and eight with a huge upset. They will 100% make a bowl game probably something along the line of Insight or Independence Bowl. The only hope Gundy has of reaching the next level is the same problem Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach has. They need to build a defense that can force turnovers and get their offense on the field. The top tier Big 12 teams have that capability and that allows mistakes from the offense. The Cowboys offense does not have that luxury and for them to compete for a conference championship, they need to be perfect.
