UFC 130 Shaping Up To Be Card of the Year

Andrew BarrFeb 3, 2011

On Thursday, the UFC revealed five fights set to take place on its memorial day weekend card and, let me tell you, I haven't been this excited for a UFC event in a long time.

The main event of the evening will be a highly anticipated rematch between Lightweight Champ Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard.

The two met inside the octagon in January and fought to a draw. It was a remarkable fight in which we saw Edgar hurt badly by Gray in the first round, but manage to survive and come back in the following rounds to keep his belt. Perhaps the most shocking was Edgar's ability to out-wrestle Maynard.

The co-main event will be Quinton Jackson vs.Thiago Silva.

Both men are coming off big wins, and this fight will be to determine the number one contender at light-heavyweight. The victor will meet the winner of Mauricio Rua and Rashad Evans, who are set to meet at UFC 128.

Roy Nelson, coming off a loss to Junior Dos Santos, has another difficult opponent ahead of him in former heavyweight champ Frank Mir. Both men have a tight stand up game and good power in the hands, but Frank Mir will likely enjoy an advantage on the ground.

Brian Stann, who just sent waves through the middweight division by knocking out Chris Leben, will face the toughest opponent he's faced so far in the UFC, Wanderlei Silva. However, by the time UFC 130 comes around it will have been more than a year since Wanderlei has fought in the octagon, so ring-rust could be a factor.

The last fight announced was a welterweight match up between Thiago Alves and Rick Story. Thiago will likely be a heavy favourite going into the fight as he is easily the toughest opponent Story has faced in his MMA career.

Let's all thank Joe Silva for this one, folks. It's one of the most stacked cards in a long time and every fight has the potential for fireworks. I can't even begin to guess which two fighters will be awarded fight of the night.

Can you?
