NFL Draft 2011: Combine Invitees and Positional Tiered Breakdown

Dan Van WieFeb 4, 2011

The NFL has announced their official list of 329 players that they are inviting to the Scouting Combines in Indianapolis, which will be held from Feb. 23 - March 1st.

The Selection Committee votes on every player and unless the player receives enough votes, they are not invited. The committee sets out with a goal of extending an invitation for every player that they believe will be drafted in the upcoming draft.

Since this list is so long, we have broken it down according to projected position. The projected position is key because that is the position that they will be tested against the rest of their peers at the Combines.

Rather than just list every name by position, we will break them down in to tiers. Each tier represents a specific grade that the players were awarded at ESPN Scouts, Inc. Those grades are subject to change between now and draft day, but this is what they were at the time this article was compiled. We also will distinguish the underclassmen from the seniors. Call it a Preliminary Combine Comprehensive Guide if you prefer.

Grade Tiers

The grades at ESPN Scouts Inc are an early indication of where a player is graded before the up close scrutiny of the NFL Combines begins. While their scores cover the broad spectrum that is college football, every NFL team has their own unique grades that address their own schemes and specific needs for each position on the team.

The most common awarded score is 30, and since the highest grade is 100, a 30 means that this is going to be a long road for this player to become an NFL starter. We are talking seventh round or not being drafted at all. There are 329 invitations sent out, but there are not 329 draft picks. There are usually 224 draft picks, plus extra compensation picks awarded for lost free agents.

A 30 grade might be able to contribute on special teams, or serve as organizational depth on the practice squad, but a 30 grade still appears on quite a few players that were invited to the combine.

It is entirely possible that there are players that will be drafted that do not receive an invite to the combine, and that would be some gem of a player that is tucked away somewhere in the world.

When we break down each position in to tiers, we will use the following grading system:

Tier One  - grade of 85 - 100 from Scouts Inc.

Tier Two - grade of 65 - 84

Tier Three - grade of 45 - 64

Tier Four - grade of 44 and below

Below Average - (5th tier) - means you weren't good enough to receive an invitation, or your school is off the map or you are way under the radar.

If you are not happy with where a specific player is, per his pier group, please understand that is where his grade came in according to the above grading system. I did not assign the grade to any player.

Hybrids: Two players are listed on the NFL Combine that lead me to list them as hybrids, because honestly, I am not sure how to list them. Both are Seniors and both are Nebraska Cornhuskers and they are Eric Hagg and DeJon Gomes. Both are coming in with the DB's, but both are listed as OLB (outside linebacker). Therefore, amid the confusion, they receive their own special slide.

So, there you have it. All positions laid out in tiers, with all 329 invitees, that you can print out when you sit back to watch the combines. Or save this list for draft day, and then see which players have zoomed up a tier or two (Danny Watkins) and which ones have zoomed down a tier or two (Jake Locker). Either way it is interesting to see all the moving parts, all the opinions and all of the hard work and sweat to try to raise their draft stock.
