Pouring Cold Water on Colorado’s Victory over WVU

Jeff WilliamsSep 19, 2008

Sorry CU fans. I know you are pleased that you beat a ranked team, but this was not a game that CU should have won.

The simple reason why CU won and WVU lost is that WVU made a huge blunder hiring Bill Stewart after an emotional Fiesta Bowl win.

WVUโ€™s new coach is so awesome, Rich Rodriguez wanted nothing to do with him with his new staff in Michigan. Additionally, Bill Stewart was 8-25 during his one stint as a head coach at VMI.

On top of that, he didnโ€™t even get fired based on his record, he got fired for making racially insensitive remarks:

"

Stewart resigned in 1996 after making a racially-insensitive comment towards a player regarding his on-field behavior. Stewart took responsibility for his comments and offered to resign in order to save the jobs of his assistants. About the incident, Stewart said โ€œIt was an isolated incident that never happened before and never happened after. I would certainly change the wording but never the intent.

"

HG believes Stewart will be gone by the end of this year. No way you can have a coach who is even slightly branded a racist.

Also, Husker fans should not look at this as any indication as how we will do against Virginia Tech. While VT may not be as strong as previous years, they have a well-coached team and a system thatโ€™s been in place for years. They wonโ€™t make the same preparation and coaching errors as WVU did last night.

So while Dan Hawkins finally gives CU some justification for his employment, just remember: the team you beat last night is not anywhere close to the same team that won the Fiesta Bowl.
