Peter Mueller Skates: Injured Avalanche Star Makes First Appearance Of 2010-2011

James CriderFeb 2, 2011

Today, Colorado Avalanche forward Peter Mueller skated for the first time since suffering a concussion in the preseason, the Denver Post reports.

Mueller, who sustained a concussion in a preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings, hasn't participated in any on ice activities since that time. The concussion was Mueller's second in a span of six months, suffering a concussion in a regular season game against the San Jose Sharks on April 4th.

While Mueller's return to the ice is encouraging, there's no telling when he'll be able to return to NHL action. A concussion is a devastating injury for an athlete and Mueller has had three of them in his four years as a pro.

There's no question the Avalanche could use Mueller's services this season. With rampant injuries throughout the Avalanche's line-up and a Peter Forsberg situation which is murky at best, Mueller could certainly provide a spark for the struggling Avalanche, who've dropped three of four.

However, if the Avalanche are unable to sustain a role in the Western Conference playoff picture, Mueller is better off sticking to light practices than participating in NHL games.

There's no reason to risk his health if the Avalanche aren't competitive enough to make it to the post season.
