NFL Trade Rumors: Best and Worst Case Scenarios for Kevin Kolb Next Season
The Eagles recently put the franchise tag on Michael Vick. Andy Reid knows Vick is too valuable to have him walk away. Philadelphia will now listen to offers pertaining Kevin Kolb.
A year ago Reid was getting rid of Donovan McNabb. Now he may be shipping Kolb somewhere. It's a good problem to have. He just needs to make the right decision. We aren't really sure Reid made the right one last year. Things worked out as they won the NFC East, but the original plan was for Kolb to start, not Vick.
Kolb is one of the hottest names on the trading block. Several teams need a quarterback and Kolb is only set to make $1.4 million in 2011. That happens to be $7 million less than what Vince Young will make. That is something teams are definitely considering.
Philadelphia is probably waiting for a new collective bargaining agreement though. So it could be awhile before Kolb is dealt to another team.
Here are ten options for the eagles and Kevin Kolb. I list them from best to worst.
1. Minnesota Vikings
1 of 10
Brett Favre is gone. Tarvaris Jackson and Joe Webb are not the answer. If they can pull a deal for Kolb they have to do it. I'm not sure if Kolb is worth the Vikings 12th overall pick, but a swap of first rounders and a combination of other picks or players might work.
If Kolb has a list Minnesota has to be number one. He could easily win the starting role and he has a lot of talent surrounding him. Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice, and Visanthe Shiancoe are great weapons for Kolb to spread the ball too.
The Vikings just need a quarterback. How about giving Philly a call?
2. San Francisco 49ers
2 of 10
New head coach Jim Harbaugh knows he needs a quarterback. He may want to stick with Alex Smith for now and draft one for the future. It may be a big risk taking a quarterback with the seventh overall pick.
Harbaugh could draft one in the later rounds to hopefully develop. Or he could not worry about any of that and trade for Kevin Kolb. Kolb would again have great talent around him. Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore need a leader to help guide them to more wins. Kolb could be that guy.
It all depends on what the new coach wants to do. Develop or try and win now.
3. Tennessee Titans
3 of 10
First Vince Young was out. Now Jeff Fisher is out. They're starting over in Tennessee, but that doesn't mean they have to give up wins. Most teams that start fresh struggle within the first year or two.
The Titans need to find a coach first before they make any moves. This is could hurt their chances at getting Kolb, who would be a great asset to the Titans. They have already interviewed to in house candidates, and they just received permission to interview the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.
Tennessee may draft a quarterback in the first round. Or the new coach trade for a guy who has experience. Kerry Collins is not the answer. He'll be lucky if he makes it through the season. The Titans need someone else as their signal caller. Make a trade for Kolb and there won't be any pain that comes with a rookie QB.
4. Arizona Cardinals
4 of 10
Larry Fitzgerald wants a legit quarterback to throw him the ball. Derek Anderson is not the guy for Arizona. They're going to either draft a quarterback, again, or trade for a one. Kevin Kolb and Donovan McNabb come to mind.
Kolb could land here and make Fitzgerald happy. And having a happy franchise player is good, especially when said player is thinking about leaving. If the Cardinals keep losing Fitzgerald isn't going to stay in Arizona much longer.
5. Miami Dolphins
5 of 10
Those few Miami fans out there aren't too happy with Chad Henne. He played decent this year throwing for over 3,000 for the first time in his career. But he hasn't proven he can win the tough close games. Nor can he compete with the upper echelon of QB's in the AFC East.
Trading for Kevin Kolb would add a quarterback race in the spring time. It would be a race that could bring out the true competitor of both players. Miami may trade Henne in that deal because Philly won't have anyone of worth except Vick.
Miami is looking for answers. The quarterback position is a place to start with. Make a trade for Kevin Kolb and make your team better.
6. Washington Redskins
6 of 10
The Redskins thought they hit the lottery when they traded for Donovan McNabb and got new head coach Mike Shanahan, but things didn't work out.
Shanahan wasn't happy with McNabb and issues arose. They were so big that McNabb was pulled for Rex Grossman. If Rex Grossman is starting over a pro bowl quarterback there are huge problems. They may be looking to trade McNabb to a team in desperate need of a veteran quarterback.
If they ship McNabb, Shanahan may be looking to the draft for his future quarterback. But he should try to work a deal for Kolb. He knows he'll be getting a quarterback with experience in Kolb. Kolb has proven he can play in the NFL where as drafting a rookie would greatly hurt the Redskins.
Should they draft or trade? Many teams are faced with this decision. Getting an Eagles QB didn't work well last time but this go around things could be different.
7. Cleveland Browns
7 of 10
Cleveland would be a decent option for Kolb. If traded to the Browns Kolb might have to compete for the job, but that all depends on who Mike Holmgren would put in the trade.
Colt McCoy should potential in his rookie season. If veteran QB Jake Delhomme can stay healthy he will probably be the starter. But either one of those could be on the move if the Browns decide they want Kolb.
The Browns have a chance to make their offense a little better if the right guy falls their way. They have the sixth overall pick and hope A.J. Green can fall to them. While that isn't likely, the Browns might make a stretch for Julio Jones.
If Kolb does get traded to Cleveland he better hope the Browns sign more talent to help him.
8. Seattle Seahawks
8 of 10
Matt Hasselback's days as an NFL quarterback are numbered. He's getting up there in age and his health for the full season is questionable. Hasselback missed two games this season with injuries.
The Seahawks aren't 100 percent sure on Whitehurst as their future quarterback. Trading for Kolb would give them more depth and insurance for Hasselback.
The likely hood of a trade happening is slim, but this team would be a better fit than others. I know Kolb is going to want to start now, but why start for a team that cannot protect you? The Seahawks would be an okay fit for Kolb.
9. Buffalo Bills
9 of 10
The Bills haven't had a good quarterback for a long time. Ryan Fitzpatrick appears to be a contender but Buffalo isn't sure if he's a one hit wonder. Anybody else remember the Derek Anderson of 2007?
The Bills might consider drafting a quarterback but it would be a huge risk with the third overall pick. Trading for Kevin Kolb adds insurance to the Bills. There would definitely be a quarterback race.
If the Bills fully believe in Fitzpatrick then no deal will be made. Kolb probably won't be to happy with going to the Bills because he wants to start. But Kolb doesn't really get much say.
10. Carolina Panthers
10 of 10
This would be the worst place for Kolb to go. Steve Smith could be on the move and Kolb would be left with no one. Running back DeAngelo Williams is expected to leave via free agency. There's no question Kolb would be the starting quarterback, but it would be a tough year.
The Panthers would be really stupid to give up the No. 1 overall pick, but strange things happen all the time. The Panthers don't have a second round pick. To get Kolb they would have to give up a combination of their third round pick and players. Carolina may not be willing to do such a thing for Kolb.
New head coach Ron Rivera will want to rebuild the Panthers. And you do that through the draft. But he is faced with a major decision. Stick with Jimmy Clausen and hope he can win, or should he trade for Kevin Kolb?
