Tampa Bay's Raheem Morris and Josh Freeman Are the NFL's Most Underrrated Duo

Joye PruittFeb 2, 2011

Everyone already knows about the infamous Belichick and Brady power combo, and we all have heard more than enough this year about Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez.

There seems to be plenty credit floating around the league for these Coach-QB duos, but none of the lists have the most explosive and still improving duo of Raheem Morris and Josh Freeman of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Morris was no stranger to the franchise when he was hired as the head coach. He was their defensive quality control coach during his first stint with the Bucs, then quickly ascended to positions of defensive assistant and assistant defensive backs coach.

Even though he left the team to coach Kansas State for a season, the Bucs understood the value Morris carried.

He returned as defensive backs coach and, soon after, found himself on a podium answering questions on how he, as head coach, was going to make the Bucs a championship team.

Josh Freeman was just entering the league that season—with a little drama too.

There were whispers during the 2009 summer that Freemam would be a holdout out of college. But through all the controversy, the quarterback was on the field throwing for Coach Morris and exuding the energy necessary for improvement.

Under Morris’ leadership, Freeman started every game in the 2010 season. He finished with 3,451 passing yards, a 61.4 completion rate and only six interceptions to show for it.

These are statistics that fall into the category as Michael Vick, Eli Manning and Carson Palmer—all of whom have over five years experience and frequent postseason visits.

Raheem Morris has the ability to connect with today’s football players.

With student-athletes breaking out of college like the wind, his age, energy and background give them the trust and reliance they need from a coach and he is defensive-minded—a dire need in order to make the playoffs, even Super Bowl.

Morris understands how important his QB is to his personal, and team's success, while Freeman understands how lucky he is to be coached by the man.

With the dedication the two have shown for each other, there will most definitely be a power shift in the league.
