NFL Free Agency: Nnamdi Asomugha Should Sign With the Philadelphia Eagles

Donald WoodFeb 2, 2011

As the NFL free agency period approaches, the Philadelphia Eagles will have to take a hard look at signing All-Star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha is one of the best cover cornerbacks in the league and he is just as talented at defending the run and finishing his tackles as he is in coverage.

Forget Revis Island, Philadelphia needs Asomugha Island.

The former Raiders cornerback is a shut-down corner that can make open field tackles, something the Eagles haven’t had since Sheldon Brown and Brian Dawkins left.

He is the perfect all-around cornerback that would complement the all-or-nothing style of Asante Samuel on the other side of the defense for the Eagles. If Asomugha does come to Philadelphia, that would give Asante Samuel more room to jump routes because you could slide a safety behind him to cover for his mistakes.

Asomugha’s contract was voided by the Raiders after he failed to meet certain statistical criteria.  How they would let him go is still such a mystery.

The idea that the Eagles could have one of the top three defensive backs in the NFL must make Andy Reid salivate like he was at a fried chicken buffet. The Eagles secondary was torched a few times last season and ranked in the middle of the pack in most statistical categories against the pass. Asomugha is great and the Eagles would be smart to try to bring him in.

Although financially, it may spread the Eagles a little thinner than they would like but they can use the draft to fill in a lot of the spots that have glaring holes.

With the looming lockout, no moves will be made until a new CBA is in place. But if the Eagles can acquire Asomugha, they would have one of the better secondaries in the NFC East and the NFC all together.

Signing Asomugha would make the Eagles secondary so dangerous and whoever comes in as the defensive coordinator would have a great group of guys.
