Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz: Is It Time for the Welterweight Champs To Meet?

Jim BerdyszFeb 1, 2011

Talk about wishful thinking.

Before current Strikeforce Welterweight Champ Nick Diaz took down "The Cyborg" Evangelista Santos by submission on Saturday, he talked about one person: Georges St-Pierre.

St-Pierre, the current UFC Welterweight Champ, would not only be a dream match-up for Diaz, but for many MMA fans alike. Now, although we all know a dream fight like this probably won't take place anytime soon (since both fight with different organizations) but lets just say if they did fight each other, who would win? Here's a breakdown of both Welterweight fighters:

Diaz, owning a 24-7 MMA record, has been on a warpath since his last UFC fight in 2006, going 10-1 (1 NC) in his last 12 matches. Some of his notable fights include two TKO victories against Frank Shamrock and Marius Zaromskis at Strikeforce. It should be noted that while Diaz does have seven career losses, five of them have come by decision. He has been known to call out his opponents in the past, but calling out a fight with St-Pierre definitely draws more attention.

The Canadian St-Pierre on the other hand, hasn't lost his UFC Welterweight Title for more than two years now. Currently ranked by Sherdog as the No. 1 Welterweight in the world with a remarkable 23-2 MMA record, he has left many wondering, can anybody take him down? GSP recently defeated Josh Koshcheck by decision for the second time in his career, and will face Jake Shields at UFC 129 in April.

A fight between Diaz and St-Pierre maybe just a dream, but it could very well become more reachable if UFC is willing to let it happen.

Honestly, Diaz can talk all he wants about fighting and defeating GSP, but until someone finally strips St-Pierre of his UFC Welterweight Title, he is not going anywhere anytime soon. For now, all Diaz and MMA fans can do is wait, hoping for that dream fight. If only, if only.
