NBA Rumors: Does Carmelo Anthony Have "Superstar" Qualities?
Speculation about where Carmelo Anthony will end up next season has been circulating for quite some time now. Anthony is a great player who is known for putting points on the board.
But is his greatness "superstar" worthy?
Anthony isn't known for his leadership or defensive effort, and there is more to the game than scoring.
It doesn't matter how many points you put on the board individually if the other team's total still grants them a win. Anthony scored 37 points against the New Jersey Nets in the game on Jan. 31, 2011, showing that he can do his part for the team.
One is left to wonder: If Anthony were to step up as a better leader and defensive player, would he have sealed a trade deal by now?
Trade talks with the Nets have come to a halt, and that leaves Anthony to become a free agent if he hasn't been traded to a team by Feb. 24, 2011.
This all lines up perfectly for Anthony's next team, who could then offer a cheaper deal in the last few days before the deadline or acquire him after Anthony becomes a free agent.
Can Anthony afford to be a free agent?
The Denver Nuggets don't want to lose Anthony to free agency and get nothing for him. Anthony is asking for a $65 million contract extension that he wouldn't be able to get as a free agent.
Anthony's dream is to play for the New York Knicks, but speculation is also being made about other trade possibilities. The Nets aren't expected to get back into trade talks.
