NFL Free Agency 2011: Philadelphia Eagles Should Look at Raiders Free Agents

Jason KarlFeb 1, 2011

As a fan of football for many years, the thought of no football next season sends chills down my back.

Without a CBA, there will be no free agency and no trades, including draft day trades (something the Eagles do a lot of).

That being said, I think eventually there will be agreement, especially after some joyous news that NFLPA President DeMaurice Smith and the Commissioner Roger Goodell are going to sit down and have meetings.

The Eagles have a lot of needs across the football team, especially on defense. They legitimately need to upgrade every position on defense.

The Oakland Raiders have a lot of free agents they need to take care of, and it is unlikely the Raiders can re-sign all their free agents.

So let's take a look at some of their free agents the Eagles may want to target:

5. Stanford Routt

For a guy that is targeted by most offenses, cornerback Stanford Routt proved to be a solid player.

He is a bigger cornerback at 6'1", 195 pounds, something the Eagles need in a smaller secondary.

Routt had 55 tackles, two interceptions, and 12 passes defended. He can provide the Eagles with a strong complement to star Asante Samuel.

Routt will probably come cheaper than what he is worth because of the strong cornerback market.

4. Michael Huff

While Michael Huff may never live up to the hype of being the seventh overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, he is still a solid safety in this league.

Huff is a rangy safety and has speed to cover the entire field and is also much improved in run defense.

Huff is 6'1", 205 pounds—about the size of Eagles safety Nate Allen.

For the season, Huff recorded 94 tackles, three interceptions, four sacks, three forced fumbles, and seven passes defended—above-average numbers for a safety.

Though both Huff and Allen play free safety, Huff can certainly be moved to strong safety.

Eagles current strong safety Quintin Mikell is a free agent, and I do not expect the Eagles to re-sign him.

3. Richard Seymour

Richard Seymour had one of his best seasons and was a dominating defensive tackle.

Seymour is 6'6", 310 pounds and is quick and athletic enough to fit Eagles defensive line coach Jim Washburn's scheme.

Seymour would provide the Eagles a dominating tackle who is stout against the run and can provide a pass rush up the middle, freeing up Trent Cole on the outside.

Seymour had 48 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and six tackles for losses this season—elite numbers for a defensive tackle.

Though the Raiders gave up a lot to acquire him, Seymour may not want to return, unless he has no choice and is franchised for the second straight season.

2. Robert Gallery

Robert Gallery was considered a bust after he did not pan out at left tackle, but still proved to be hard-working and diligent, re-creating himself as a guard years ago.

Gallery is now one of the best offensive guards in football and is the Raiders' best offensive lineman.

At 6'7", 330 pounds, he fits the description of a typical Andy Reid guard.

Gallery is also versatile and can move out to right tackle if needed.

Eagles quarterback Micheal Vick needs a solid offensive line to protect him, and Gallery could be a nice option if the Eagles miss out on Logan Mankins.

1. Nnamdi Asomugha

Why is Philip Rivers even testing the best defensive corner in the league?

Nnamdi Asomugha would have a major impact on the Eagles defense. He is the true definition of a shutdown corner, as he was targeted less than 30 times last season.

Asomugha can stuff the run as well as he is the size of most safeties in the league. He stands in at 6'2", and 210 pounds.

Asomugha would form the best cornerback tandem in the NFL with Asante Samuel if he signed with the Eagles.

Hopefully Nnamdi Asomugha listened to DeSean Jackson at the Pro Bowl.
