Philadelphia Eagles Franchise Tag Michael Vick: What It Means for Kevin Kolb

Donald WoodJan 31, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles will make it official next month and place their franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick, according to ESPN.

Most of the league knew this move was coming and it is definitely the best move for the Eagles as an organization.

The Eagles played amazing under Mike Vick, going 8-3 in the games he played start to finish.

He set career highs in yards passing (3,018), touchdowns passing (21), touchdowns rushing (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2).

Vick was also selected to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time, closing one of the best statistical seasons in the NFL this season and one of the most impressive comebacks in football history.

That’s why the Eagles' placement of the franchise tag on Vick’s collar was no surprise.

But what does this mean for Kolb?

The first obstacle in this situation is the potential lockout. Teams will not be allowed to trade players for picks at or before the NFL Entry Draft, which is what Kolb’s likely trade value would be.

If the Eagles want to move him to a willing franchise like San Francisco or Minnesota, they would need a Collective Bargaining Agreement in place before the draft.

As it stands right now, the likelihood of this is very low, which will make Kolb’s departure from Philadelphia delayed.

Kolb said after the season that he wants to be starting somewhere in 2011. It looks pretty certain that Kolb will be moved and all of the success of Aaron Rodgers is really pumping up Kevin Kolb’s stock.

Like Aaron Rodgers, Kolb spent years behind a great veteran starter and has earned the right to start. Reid has give Kolb all of the tools to be a success so going to a team like Minnesota would be a good move for Kolb.

Kolb is still under contract for 2011 for just $1.4 million, making him more desirable to perspective buyers.

All that is for sure is that Kolb isn’t going anywhere until the NFL Player's Association and Roger Goodell stop messing around and give the fans what they want.

Football!

Here's to having football next season.
