2011 NFL Mock Draft: Philadelphia Eagles 7 Round Mock Draft Pre-NFL Combine
The Philadelphia Eagles' season ended on a sour note losing to the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs after they dominated opponents for a stretch of games late in the 2010 regular season. Andy Reid and the Eagles front office will look to make smart personnel moves this off-season, especially because they are so close to earning a Super Bowl berth.
The 2011 NFL Draft won't be approached with the distant future in mind because a special player could be the boost the team needs to get over the hump.
Here is a 2011 Philadelphia Eagles seven round mock draft:
First Off...
1 of 11
...the Eagles have a few big deals to take care of before the draft comes around.
Michael Vick is a free agent and obviously must be re-signed. He won't have the temptation to go anywhere else because Philadelphia is the city that gave him a second chance.
They must focus on re-signing key defenders in Quintin Mikell and Stewart Bradley. Failing to re-sign Mikell would create a huge need at strong safety while losing Bradley would mean losing the one linebacker on the roster that has Pro Bowl potential.
David Akers and Sav Rocca are both free agents and should be re-signed. Akers has been one of the top kickers in the league year after year and Rocca is coming off his best season in the NFL.
Halfback James Harrison should also be retained as he performed well when given playing time.
1st Round: Gabe Carimi (OT, Wisconsin)
2 of 11
The only thing holding back the Eagles high-powered offense is their offensive line. Winston Justice is a weakness that must be upgraded.
Andy Reid loves big lineman. The average Eagles starting offensive lineman this season stood at a little under 6'5" and weighed over 330 pounds. Carimi fits the bill at 6'7", 315 pounds.
Trade Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for a Second Round Pick
3 of 11
Kolb wants to be a starting quarterback. There's no chance of that happening with the way Michael Vick played this season.
Fans may complain about not getting a first round pick, but there's no way a team would sacrifice that much after Kolb's disappointing performance this season.
2nd Round: Aaron Williams (CB, Texas)
4 of 11
With the selection they receive from Arizona, the Eagles fill a gaping hole on their defense at the cornerback position.
Trading Sheldon Brown turned out to be a mistake.
Dimitri Patterson played well to start out, but he was exposed as nothing more than a special teamer late in the season. Joselio Hanson took a step back in 2010 along with Ellis Hobbs who suffered a career ending injury.
Williams is a playmaker; an attribute Philadelphia covets in its defensive backs.
2nd Round: Marcus Cannon (G, TCU)
5 of 11
Max Jean-Gilles is a free agent and should be upgraded regardless.
Marcus Cannon is another big lineman to block for Michael Vick. He's 6'6", and weighs a whopping 350 pounds.
He played offensive tackle in college, but will shift over to guard in the NFL.
3rd Round: Quan Sturdivant (LB, North Carolina)
6 of 11
The Eagles need some help at linebacker. They really don't have any standouts at the position.
Stewart Bradley hasn't been the same since his injury. Jamar Chaney showed promise in the middle, but doesn't deserve high expectations quite yet. Moises Fokou is good enough, but he's nothing to build around.
Quan Sturdivant can play all three linebacker positions. He would most likely be able to start right away for the Eagles.
4th Round: DeMarcus Van Dyke (CB, Miami)
7 of 11
The Eagles need to find a reserve corner they can actually rely on.
Van Dyke's stock sky-rocketed after the Senior Bowl. He showed great coverage skills all week long and has risen up to third round consideration.
He's only 168 pounds, so the third round would be a bit of a stretch at this point, but he has the ability to gain weight with his 6'1" frame.
4th Round: Dontay Moch (DE, Nevada)
8 of 11
The Eagles filled all their major needs, so they can afford to take a chance on Dontay Moch.
The pass rush could use a boost after none of the three defensive ends they drafted last year were able to make an instant impact.
There are reports that Moch has run a 4.25, 4.18, and even a 4.08 forty yard dash. Those times are unheard of for a 185 pound cornerback, but he's a 245 pound linebacker.
He's definitely worth the risk if those times are legit, but I'll remain skeptical until I see results at the NFL Combine.
5th Round: Cedric Thornton (DT, Southern Arkansas)
9 of 11
Brodrick Bunkley isn't expected to win his starting spot back. The Eagles could afford to challenge Mike Patterson and Antonio Dixon.
Thornton is a super sleeper out Southern Arkansas where he made competition look inferior.
In 2009, he led the nation in tackles for loss.
5th Round: Kris O'Dowd (C, USC)
10 of 11
Nick Cole is a free agent and had his struggles in 2010. O'Dowd was once a first round prospect, but after an injury and a horrible Senior Bowl, his stock has plummeted.
The Eagles weren't afraid to select cornerback Trevard Lindley last year, a former projected first round pick who fell in the draft after a bad season and Senior Bowl like O'Dowd
They must take the risk to improve their offensive line depth. If O'Dowd can get back to where he once was performance wise, he could eventually replace Jamaal Jackson.
7th Round: Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (WR, Iowa)
11 of 11
The Eagles are set at punt returner with DeSean Jackson, but they could use an upgrade at kick returner. They also don't have much behind Jason Avant in the slot, and he had his struggles in 2010.
Johnson-Koulianos was one of the nation's very best kickoff return men and is Iowa's all-time leading receiver.
He'll fall on draft day after being convicted of marijuana possession.
