WWE Royal Rumble Results: 10 Things We Learned From Edge's Win

John KindelanJan 31, 2011

The company-shaking event that is the Royal Rumble has come and gone, with not nearly as many surprises as we all would have hoped for. We saw zero title changes and apparently it was someones destiny to win the over-the top-rope royal rumble.

The first match of the night Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler proved to be an interesting one, while going into the match one might have wondered how a former spirit squad member and long time "Hi, I'm Dolph Ziggler" would end up in a match at one of the largest pay per view events of the year contending for the world heavyweight title. The answer is obvious for watching fans, the power of Vickie Guerrero guided Ziggler to this match and proved to almost be the difference maker. Last week Vickie had banned the Spear as a move Edge could use in the match hoping it would disarm the Rated R Superstar. But as we all knew Edge is more than a one trick pony and has an impressive arsenal at his disposal and even chose to borrow something from a friend. Lets break it down and look at the 10 things we learned.

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

1. The World Heavyweight title match can be the first bout on a card, and it makes perfect sense.

They had to choose which of the three title matches would go first and to be honest my money was on the woman's title, but it looks like I lost that bet. However I have heard that the back room considers the first match of a PPV just as important as the last as its what sets the tone for the rest of the night. If they would have started off with the fatal four-way for the Diva title, who knows how many people would have opted out from ordering the event.

2. Ziggler and Edge can put on a 30-minute match without resulting in a boring chant.

These two gave it their all, going full throttle and non-stop the entire bout they showed that a match can go this long and be entertaining at the same time. Normally we would see a lot of arm bars and working of a body part to give the guys some breathing time in the ring, but this match consisted of move after move keeping the story and the match going.

3. Ziggler has potential

At one point during the match, myself and several others began to voice that maybe Dolphi Ziggler could win this match. Why not? The Miz is the WWE champion, why can't a guy like Dolph Ziggler grab some gold as well. He clearly is talented in the ring with an impressive move set, and he's got the acting chops for mic work and interviews. Come on, any guy who can pull off kissing Vickie and looking like they enjoy it is doing a pretty good job.

4. Edge is deserving of the title

While yes, he used the Spear even though it was barred continuing his moniker of the ultimate opportunist, he did not necessarily cheat to win and retain his title. In fact its fair to say that the Spear wasn't the finisher that ended the match. Which brings us to point 5.

5. Was the use of the 'Un-Prettier' a foreshadowing of things to come.

A lot of fans were hoping for Captain Charisma to return to the ring tonight, but it just wasn't in the cards. In fact a lot of people didn't show up that we thought would, but that's a whole different article. Edge ended the bout when he hit Ziggler with his former tag team champion partner's, Christian,  finishing move. Will this lead to a talk between Edge and Christian? I can see it now: "Hey I saw you used my move to finish Ziggler. Its probably because its the most awesome powerful finisher in the WWE." - Christian. "Um yeah, well it was only good because I had just hit him with my Spear." - Edge. This will go on and lead to possibly having Christian ask Edge for a match.

6. We're not done yet.

With the way the match ended, even though it was somewhat clean, Vickie will bring up that he used the Spear and she'll demand a rematch or to have him stripped of the title, so I don't think we've seen the last of Ziggler and Edge, if anything Dolph will most likely end up in the Elimination Chamber with him.

7. Vickie's Power

Not only has she been able to ban moves, but last night she stood on the  apron and hit Edge several times without having the ref declare a disqualification. What is the extent of her power and when will it be put in check. I'm all for an evil GM and having that person reek havoc on the face superstars, but we need a little balance, she needs a true foil for her to really grow as a villain, and while I thought that might have been Caitlin, it looks like another blonde is stepping up to the plate.

8. Kelly Kelly?

Maybe I missed an episode of Smackdown, but what does Kelly Kelly have to do with Edge or Vickie? However I'm not complaining, that part was definitely one of the high points of the night. Lets just say, God Bless who ever chose for her to wear those pants. While Edge is great with having a female valet, we've all seen it before, I really think this was something more, I think this was leading us to another participant in the Elimination Chamber and another contender for the title...

9. Drew McIntyre

The chosen one may be the next mid card guy to step up to the big leagues. Drew has been trying to convince Kelly Kelly for a couple of weeks that she should be with him, if Kelly all of a sudden has a bit of a crush on The Rated R Superstar we could see a rivalry come about between the two. It would then have Edge getting attacked on two fronts, one side because of his ex, the other side because of his new girlfriend.

10. Wrestlemania

Two months away and another big Pay-Per-View before we get there and we now have four possibilities for our current Heavyweight Champion. The first—his former tag team partner stepping up to the plate demanding a match and maybe entering the chamber. Second—The feud continues with Vickie and Ziggler. Three—The Chosen Drew McIntyre goes for the gold and Four— Albert Del Rio whom Edge had a problem with from when he first started has earned a match at Mania by winning the title and I have no doubt it's Edge's title he'll be gunning for.

Edge might have a big letter R on the front of his shirt, but he no doubt has an even bigger target on his back.
