Jeff Fisher: The Former Tennessee Titans Coach Has Reason To Be Relieved

Erik FrenzJan 27, 2011

When the New England Patriots traded Randy Moss, Bill Simmons responded by comparing Randy Moss to a “crazy hot chick." That analogy is a work of art, forget the fact that Simmons is one of my favorite writers.

When SI.com's Don Banks reported that the Titans and Jeff Fisher were parting ways, similar ideas crept into my mind. Bud Adams and Jeff Fisher were the "unstable couple."

They were once such a happy couple. They were so happy that they packed up and moved together. They had amazing experiences together. Some couples "honeymoon" for a little while; these two did it for over six years.

They were the cute couple that made you want to puke and tell them to get a room.

But the relationship worked for whatever reason.

For better (a berth in Super Bowl XXXIV) or worse (the third overall pick in 2006), it worked for 17 years. Things got tough at times, but they usually do when a relationship lasts that long, and it was never anything they couldn't overcome.

The relationship became harder to manage, as it usually does, when their disagreements came to the forefront. Adams wanted to love his "Golden Boy" most, while Fisher wanted to love his entire "family" equally, and do what was best for everyone.

Of course, this wasn't the only disagreement that led to the break-up. From starting strong and finishing flat, to starting flat and finishing strong, the Titans encountered a few tough seasons and myriad tough losses over the past few years.

But both sides are probably happy that the unstable relationship is over (although as usual, one side delusional in so being).

Both sides will move on, as they usually do. Fisher will take a year off, as he should, to let his options unfold before him.

Adams, however, will scramble to the first thing that's available. He has to. That is, unless there's no football in 2011. The problem for him is that he's known as one of those "crazy hot chicks" who's just more trouble than he's worth.

The pickings are slim right now, too, and we all know the super hot coaches like Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden wouldn't work for a senile man like Adams.

Now, with most of the better candidates already spoken for, the Titans are running out of options.

Eric Mangini and Jim Zorn are both available, but both have a reputation that is hardly spot-free.

After what happened to Mangini in Cleveland following his divorce from the New York Jets, it's safe to say he has learned not to rebound too quickly.

Zorn has already been in one controlling relationship, with the Redskins and Dan Snyder. After being shown the door in Baltimore where he was just a coordinator, it looks like he's still not ready for a big commitment.

And in reality, who's going to want to work for Adams? He was constantly at odds with one of the most talented and respected head coaches in the league. Their storied battles over the quarterback controversy were dizzying to anyone who tried to follow it, especially over the past three years.

But rest assured, they're both feeling the sense of relief that anyone naturally feels when a tough relationship is finally over.

Fisher, though, has every reason to be relieved. He has a clean break, and will soon get a clean slate. Hopefully, for his sake, with an owner who has his head about him a bit more than Adams.

And if head coaches are losing their heads even nearly as rapidly as they did in 2010, Fisher will have his pick of the litter.
