Super Bowl 45 Prop Bets: Breaking Down The 20 Craziest Props For The Big Game

Scott AltmanJun 7, 2018

With Super Bowl XLV less than one week away, it is time for compulsive gamblers worldwide to focus in on this year's set of Prop Bets.

Prop Bets allow one to wager on virtually everything imaginable throughout the course of the game, the half time show, post game celebration, and every minute, irrelevant, and random detail in between. You can slap down some cash on which players will score, when they will score, how they will score, and what Fergie will wear during the halftime show.

In other words, prop bets are awesome. Fittingly, there is an absurd and awesome cache this year, and you have never truly watched a football game until you have last week's paycheck riding on what color gatorade will be dumped on the winning team's head coach. If you want to add some spice to your regular Super Bowl viewing, take a look at these 20 prop bets. (All odds were taken from Bodog)

What will Christinia Aguilera's Hat or Hair Color, and How Long Will The National Anthem Be?

1 of 20
LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 15: Singer Christina Aguilera sings the national anthem before Game Six of the 2010 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics at Staples Center on June 15, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. NOTE TO USER: User

National Anthem Props: How long will it take her to sing it? Over 1 minute, 52 seconds (-140), Under 1 minute, 52 seconds (Even); How long will she hold the note "brave" at the end? Over 6 seconds (-140), Under 6 seconds (Even); Will Aguilera wear a cowboy hat? Yes (+300); Will her hair be anything except completely blonde when she sings? Yes (+175)

The best way to analyze this set of props is to analyze Aguilera's past National Anthem performances. Luckily for us, she belted out the Star Spangled Banner before Game 7 of the NBA Finals last year. These props essentially mirror her performance which took exactly 1 minute and 52 seconds, including a six second linger on "brave."

She also seemed to be striving for a Marilyn Monroe themed look (fitting for Los Angeles), which could suggest that she will don a cowboy hat next Sunday. There is no reason to believe that she will change her color.

Ultimately, Aguilera is a proven star with a sublime voice. She does not have to get fancy, but she did during her performance at the NBA Finals. She seemed to go a little bit overboard at times, and considering the Super Bowl is an ever bigger stage, I expect her to take it slow, but keep it more simple.

Prediction: Take the under in both time props, and if you have some extra cash, I think there is a good chance she will cowboy up and wear a hat.

How Many Times Will FOX Show Jerry Jones During the Game?

Will FOX show Jerry Jones over or under 2 1/2 times during the game? Over (-130), Under (-110) (From kickoff to final whistle. No taped pictures of past video).

Super Bowl XLV is taking place in 'Jerry World,' also known as Cowboys Stadium. This new monstrosity is Jones' child. It completely encapsulates the Cowboys' way, and completely defines his extravagant reign as owner of the team; hence, FOX is bound to give him plenty of face time.

Jones is guaranteed at least two appearances during the game. FOX will probably show him towards the very beginning of the game, and likely in the immediate aftermath of the halftime show. But that third appearance is tricky. It might take a stadium malfunction or extra downtime for FOX to switch over to Jerry. And considering the "live pictures only" qualification, these odds look rough.

Prediction: Take the under. There are too many potential variables working against Jones. There is a good chance they will show him just prior to kickoff rather than right after, which dwindles him down to just one appearance.

How Many Times Will FOX Mention Brett Favre During The Game?

3 of 20

Will FOX mention Brett Favre over or under 2 1/2 times during the game? Over (-125), Under (-105)

Now that Aaron Rodgers has completely emerged from Favre's shadow, we can expect to hear "Aaron Rodgers has finally emerged from Brett Favre's shadow," plenty of times on Sunday. Joe Buck will be inclined to give some kind of circumspective introduction to Rodgers as he takes the field for the first time, and a Favre reference is almost a lock. Beyond that, we could have Favre at virtually any time. If Rodgers makes a great throw, we will probably hear "that one will make 'em forget about Favre in Green Bay," from Troy Aikman.

Prediction: Take the over. There are so many instances in which Favre's name could be dropped during the game, and Troy Aikman's background as a quarterback only makes references more likely.

What Will Fergie Be Wearing When She First Appears On Stage During Halftime?

What will Fergie be wearing when she first appears on stage during the halftime show? Skirt/Dress (Even); Pants (Even); Shorts (+350); Thong/G-String/Bikini Bottom (+1000)

This year's halftime show marks the first time the NFL will bring a hip hop group on its stage after Janet Jackson's "Wardrobe Malfunction," or what I like to call "NippleGate." The NFL has pegged the Black Eyed Peas as a fitting transition back into more modern performers, but the Peas are led by Fergie, who just so happens to have a reputation for wearing some ridiculous outfits.

But rest assured that the NFL will be all over her wardrobe. They will not allow her to wear anything too revealing or provocative, and do not forget that Fergie owns a minority stake in the Miami Dolphins, which forces her to present herself well on the NFL's biggest stage. These factors obviously rule out any thong or G-string, and she will probably be more creative than to merely wear shorts.

Prediction: Like I said, the NFL will not allow Fergie to wear anything too suggestive. There is certainly a good chance she could wear a dress, but the safe money is probably with pants. She is an active performer and pants give her mobility as well as a classy look.

Whose Girlfriend Will FOX Show First? Aaron Rodgers' or Ben Roethlisberger's?

5 of 20
Gossip Girl actress Jessica Szohr
Gossip Girl actress Jessica Szohr

Who will FOX show first on TV during the game? Jessica Szohr (Aaron Rodgers' Girlfriend) (-140); Ashley Harlan (Ben Roethlisberger's Fiancee) (Even)

Hands down. They will show Aaron Rodgers' girlfriend, "Gossip Girl" star Jessica Szohr, first. First of all, she is a relatively notable star, whereas Ashley Harlan is a complete unknown. Not to mention, Roethlisberger's rape case still lingers, and showing his girlfriend could make for some awkward viewing.

However, Harlan is Ben's fiancee, where as Szohr and Rodgers are merely dating. So there is a slim chance that Harlan will garner the first view. And, there is also the possibility that either Szohr or Harlan will not be in attendance, which essentially rules them out from being shown.

Prediction: Put your money on Szohr. People know who she is, and while FOX might pan over to Harlan at some point during the game, Szohr will draw their attention first.

Who Will FOX Announcers Say Has Better Hair: Matthews Or Polamalu?

6 of 20
Clay Matthews whips his hair back and forth
Clay Matthews whips his hair back and forth

Who will Joe Buck and Troy Aikman say has better hair during the game? Troy Polamalu (-120); Clay Matthews (-120)

In order for this prop to come into play, Troy Aikman and Joe Buck must not only discuss the hair dynamic during the broadcast, but also have to agree that either Polamalu or Matthews has superior hair. In other words, this is a long shot to even see action.

Remember, both Polamalu and Matthews went to USC, and Troy Aikman starred at UCLA. His UCLA bias could persuade him not to side with either, but Troy is a southern boy from Oklahoma, and once sported a pretty impressive mullet. He will side with Matthews. Meanwhile, it is probably safe to assume that Buck will side with Polamalu just to avoid sounding biased to the Packers.

Prediction: Again, there is very little chance this prop will become active at all, let alone have a decisive winner. But if you want to invest in the "Battle of the Hairs," I would learn towards Matthews.

What Color Gatorade Will Be Dumped on The Winning Head Coach?

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - FEBRUARY 07: Head coach Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints gets Gatorade dumped on him after defeating the Indianapolis Colts during Super Bowl XLIV on February 7, 2010 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Andy

What color Gatorade will be dumped on the head coach of the winning Super Bowl team? Blue (10/1); Clear/Water (2/1); Lime Green (5/1); Orange (3/1); Red (15/2); Yellow (3/2)

Recent Super Bowl-Gatorade-dumping history has taken a liking to yellow and clear/water. The last two winning head coaches, Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin, were both showered by yellow Gatorade. Before that, Tom Coughlin, Tony Dungy, and Bill Cowher had clear/water Gatorade dumped over their heads.

This may sound far fetched, but yellow is a primary color for both the Steelers and the Saints (Okay, gold. Same thing.), so it may not be a coincidence that the players chose to pour yellow Gatorade over their respective coach's heads.

Prediction: Obviously, yellow is also a primary color for the Packers, so that is most definitely the front runner to take home the prize. The smart money is on yellow, but Lime Green becomes an interesting sleeper, and at 15-to-2, red will garner some attraction as well. But again, put your money on yellow or clear/water with yellow a slight favorite.

Who Will The Super Bowl MVP Thank First?

Who will the Super Bowl MVP of the Game thank first? Coach (+1000); Family (+400); God (+150; Teammates (+250); Does Not Thank Anyone (+200)

The outcome of this prop hinges on two factors: the personality of the player and who (if anyone) is standing next to him when he speaks during the trophy presentation. If the winning team's head coach or another player on the winning team is standing next to the M.V.P. as he receives his award, expect him to thank either his coach or his teammates first.

If an underdog wins the award, expect him to thank God first, mainly out of overwhelming disbelief. If Ben Roethlisberger wins, expect him to give an impassioned speech thanking the fans, but they are not amongst the options.

Prediction: Coach at (+1000) is extremely enticing, especially if the Packers win and a veteran player earns the M.V.P. nod. Smart money is probably on teammates. The player accepts the award on a stage overlooking his whole team, which has to persuade him to thank them early on. However, I'm taking the road less traveled and suggesting "coach."

Will B.J. Raji Be on The Field For at Least One Offensive Play?

CHICAGO, IL - JANUARY 23: B.J. Raji #90 of the Green Bay Packers reacts with teammate Sam Shields #37 after scoring on a 18-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship Game at Soldier F

Will B.J. Raji be on the field for at least one offensive play? Yes (-175); No (+135)

In their divisional round match up against the Atlanta Falcons, the Packers utilized defensive tackle B.J. Raji's massive 337 pound frame by plugging him in as a goal line fullback. Raji cleared a massive hole for John Kuhn, who ran in for an easy touchdown.

Super bowl teams have a tendency to get fancy in the big game. The Patriots famously used Mike Vrabel as a tight end multiple times, and the Bears gave Refridgerator Perry a goal line carry as well.

Prediction: All signs point to Raji getting at least one play on offense, even if it serves as nothing more than a diversion. The Packers could plug him in if they blowout the Steelers, or if they are in a closely contested game. Put your money on 'yes' and watch the big man do work.

Which Region Will Have The Higher Local TV Rating?

Will Green Bay or Pittsburgh have a higher local TV rating of the game? Pittsburgh (-140); Green Bay (Even)

The extended metropolitan areas of both Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, measure out to be roughly 311,000. So, in order to figure out which way this prop will sway, we have to investigate a few variables. The first being which city will have more inhabitants in Dallas, and will harsh weather prevent people from going to parties and watching on one television.

According to Wikipedia, the median income in Green Bay is $38,820, while the median income in Pittsburgh is $28,588. Meanwhile, the Super Bowl Sunday forecast in Green Bay calls for snow, but clear skies in Pittsburgh.

Prediction: Green Bay's higher income might indicate that its population has more room to splurge on Super Bowl tickets, and considering they have not been to the big game in almost 15 years, they will travel well. The Steelers have been to the Super Bowl twice in the last five years, and most die hards have probably already made the pilgrimage to see their team play in the Super Bowl. Pittsburgh will still travel well, but I would put my money on Green Bay. Every single household in the area will be watching the game, and the weather could keep some people watching on their own TVs rather than venturing to Super Bowl parties.

Which Super Bowl Commercial Will Have a Higher Rating On USA Today's Ad Meter?

11 of 20

Which Super Bowl commercial will have the highest rating in USA Today's annual Ad Meter? Bud Light (11/4); Budweiser(11/4); Doritos (11/2); GoDaddy.com (10/1); Pepsi Max (6/1); Skechers (12/1); Teleflora (15/1); Other (5/2)

First of all, let's just rule out Skechers and GoDaddy. Skechers produces terrible ads and GoDaddy's erotic commercials have become redundant and pointless. Teleflora, an Internet based flower delivery service, is a sleeper at 15-to-1, but this is their Super Bowl commercial debut, which makes them a little bit too risky for my own personal liking.

Budweiser will trot out some Clydesdale commercials as per tradition, and their decision to tease their ads during other sporting events shows impressive confidence. Bud Light is the most storied Super Bowl commercial producer, topping the Ad Meter for a dominant six year stretch from 2001-2006. Pepsi has lost the luster that won it multiple Ad Meter championships in the mid-90's. Doritos, meanwhile, is the up and coming ad to watch. They topped the Ad Meter in 2009, and came in second last year.

Prediction: Bud Light and Budweiser are the safest bets, as history shows. Anheuser-Busch finished atop the Ad Meter for 10 straight years, before their streak was snapped by Doritos in 2009. However, Doritos is on the rise, and I think they will snag their second championship in three years on Sunday.

Will a Steelers Player Do the Aaron Rodgers Championship Belt Celebration?

12 of 20

Will a Steelers player do the Aaron Rodgers Championship Belt celebration during the game (Must clearly appear on TV during the game. Live pictures only)? Yes (+115); No (-155)

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers traditionally does his "Championship Belt" celebration after he throws a touchdown pass. Naturally, his celebration is often mocked by opposing defenders who sack him or intercept a pass.

The Steelers are an extremely confident team with a very quiet confidence. Few players on the roster are outspoken or divas, which makes the odds on this prop rather difficult to gauge.

Prediction: Because the Packers and Steelers have virtually no bad blood, there is no reason to believe anybody will mock Aaron Rodgers. However, if, say, James Harrison gets a crucial sack, it is very easy to envision him doing the "Championship Belt." Although the 'Yes' odds are enticing at +115, this seems like a long shot to actually happen.

Will Any Player Do The Lambeau Leap After They Score a TD?

13 of 20
GREEN BAY, WI - OCTOBER 17: Aaron Rogers #12 of the Green Bay Packers jumps in the stands to celebrate a touchdown to tie the game against the Miami Dolphins at Lambeau Field on October 17, 2010 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Dolphins defeated the Packers 2

Will any player do the Lambeau Leap after a TD? Yes (+150)

Only two players on Green Bay's entire roster have even been to a Super Bowl (Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett). This should translate to an extremely energetic and hyped up Packers team.

Prediction: Absolutely. Hands down. Yes. This will happen. This is the first time 51 Packers have been to a Super Bowl, so if any of them score a touchdown, they will look to celebrate and the Lambeau Leap would be an almost instinctive action. Mark my words, this will happen.

If There Is a Picture of Someone Holding The Lombardi Trophy on USA Today, Who?

14 of 20
NEW ORLEANS - SEPTEMBER 09: A replica of the Vince Lombardi trophy at Louisiana Superdome on September 9, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)
NEW ORLEANS - SEPTEMBER 09: A replica of the Vince Lombardi trophy at Louisiana Superdome on September 9, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

If there is a picture of someone holding the Lombardi Trophy on the cover of USA Today on Monday, who will it be? Aaron Rodgers (3/2); Ben Roethlisberger (3/1); Clay Matthews (15/1); Troy Polamalu (12/1); Mike Tomlin (18/1); Mike McCarthy (18/1); Any Other Pittsburgh Player (2/1); Any Other Green Bay Player (2/1); Any Other Person (15/1); Jerry Jones (100/1)

If the Packers win, odds are definitely with Aaron Rodgers, but if a player like Donald Driver has a huge game, he could just as easily land on the front page. Similarly, if the Steelers win, a player like Hines Ward or James Harrison could be chosen for the cover. Ben Roethlisberger seems to be more of a long shot than his projected 3-to-1 given his legal troubles, and Troy Polamalu seems to be a bargain at 12-to-1.

Prediction: This is arguably the toughest prop to call given the sheer volume of possibilities. If the Steelers win, I do not think USA Today will put Roethlisberger on the cover, but rather Hines Ward (a.k.a. "Any Other Pittsburgh Player"). If the Packers win, Aaron Rodgers almost a lock, mainly because he is far and away the most widely recognizable player on Green Bay's roster.

What Will Be The Result Of The Super Bowl XLV Coin Toss? Who Will Win It?

15 of 20

What will be the result of the Coin Toss? Heads (-105); Tails (-105); Which team will win the Coin Toss? Steelers (-105); Packers (-105)

You are probably thinking this is a useless wager, a complete 50/50 shot in the dark. You are wrong. The NFC has won the Super Bowl coin toss for 13 straight years, making for one of the most unbelievable and under-reported stories in sports. Meanwhile, the result of the toss is more even, landing on heads 23 times and tails 21 times.

Prediction: The NFC has done it for the past 13 years, so why not make it 14? You almost have to assume the Packers will win the toss, but choosing head or tails is a crap-shoot. Heads has the historic advantage, so if you are feeling impulsive, put your money on the Packers and Heads.

Which Coach Will Be The First to Challenge a Play? Will It Stand or Be Reversed?

16 of 20
GREEN BAY, WI - NOVEMBER 15: Head coach Mike McCarthy of the Green Bay Packers issues a challenge by giving the red flag to head lineman Steve Stelljes #22 during a game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field on November 15, 2009 in Green Bay, Wiscon

Which team will challenge a play first? Pittsburgh (-115), Green Bay (-115); What will the be the result of the first coaches challenge? Overturned (-125), Play Stands (-105)

Unfortunately, coaches challenges statistics are nowhere to be found on the Internet, so you may have to go with your gut on this one.

Neither Tomlin nor McCarthy have necessarily bad reputations with the challenge flag, but both have run into their respective troubles. Most notably, Tomlin was criticized for challenging the opening kickoff of the AFC Championship. He won the challenge, but it negated roughly 15 yards on the play and left the Steelers with only challenge for the remainder of the game.

Prediction: Again, this is a complete gut call, and my gut tells me that Mike Tomlin will challenge a play before Mike McCarthy, and the play will be overturned. But heed your own feelings here.

Who Will Score First and How Will That Team Score?

17 of 20
PITTSBURGH, PA - JANUARY 23: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger #7 of the Pittsburgh Steelers celebrates a first quarter touchdown against the New York Jets during the 2011 AFC Championship game at Heinz Field on January 23, 2011 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Which team will score first? Pittsburgh (-105); Green Bay (-125); What will the first score of the game be? Touchdown (-170); Field Goal or Safety (+140)

The Packers completely dismantled the Bears during the opening drive of the NFC Championship. Aaron Rodgers sliced up Chicago's secondary en route to a touchdown, and Green Bay's up tempo style of play usually provides plenty of early sparks.

The Steelers do not posses the same fire power as the Pack, and they have failed to score on both of their opening drives during the 2010 postseason. They did strike first against the Jets, but failed to do so against the Ravens.

Prediction: Aaron Rodgers always seems to come out of the gate completely crisp and on target, and I expect him to be on top of his game on Sunday. I like Green Bay for a touchdown due to their unstoppable aerial attack. Do not be surprised to see the Packers go deep to Greg Jennings early.

Will a punt hit the scoreboard? Yes (+800)

Prediction: No. Do not waste your money.

How Many Times Will FOX Mention "Lockout?"

19 of 20

Will FOX mention "Lockout" over or under 1 1/2 times on TV during the game? Over (-110), Under (-130)

The current CBA chaos has stolen headlines throughout the entire 2010 NFL season, and there is a small chance that the Super Bowl will be the last football game we see for a very long time. Although the lockout is on everybody's minds, the Super Bowl is the culmination of this whole year, and it would be spoiled by continuous references to it.

Prediction: I would not surprised at all if FOX and/or the NFL put a gag order on the word for the night. There is ultimately no reason for Buck or Aikman to mention the lockout more than once, and I think the under is a relatively safe bet.

How Many Current NFL Players Will Be Arrested During Super Bowl Week?

Will over or under 1/2 current NFL players be arrested during Super Bowl Week? Over (+150), Under (-200)

An entire week of wild, NFL player sponsored parties will litter Dallas and other cities around the country. A mixture of pro athletes, celebrities, and excessive alcohol consumption would appear to be a recipe for common arrests; however, it is not.

Only two players, Atlanta Falcon Euguene Robinson for soliciting a prostitute and Baltimore Raven Ray Lewis for murder, have been arrested during Super Bowl week in recent memory.

Prediction: History is always the best indicator of how props will transpire, and history most definitely suggests the under here.
