NFL Trade Rumors: Eagles Tag Michael Vick, but Where Does Kevin Kolb Want to Go?

Brian DiTullioFeb 2, 2011

Kevin Kolb has a bright future ahead of him, assuming he gets to play.

Kolb is likely to be one of the NFL's hottest trade commodities in the 2011 offseason, but he isn't going to want to be dumped off to just any team.

The Philadelphia Eagles have a very good problem on their hands, though. They have two starting quarterbacks, one of which (Kolb) has a very tradable contract.

Kolb's contract only will cost a team $1.4 million in 2011, and since he is a viable starting quarterback, that's a steal for any team.

The question now is which team will submit the best bid since the Eagles have indicated they are putting the franchise tag on Michael Vick. While keeping Kolb would make sense for the Eagles from a depth standpoint, the fact is he is now too valuable to keep as a backup.

Assuming the Eagles do trade Kolb, will they keep his best interests in mind assuming there are multiple offers for his services once a new collective bargaining agreement is signed?

Kolb is not only going to want to start; he's also going to want to play for a team that at least has a good chance to make the playoffs in 2011.

Teams looking for a quarterback include the Dolphins, Vikings, 49ers and Cardinals. You can put the Redskins, Bills and Seahawks on that list as well, but those teams aren't going to make a move for a quarterback like Kolb.

Kolb wouldn't want to go to the Bills anyway because that team is going to draft a rookie, and it would be an endless battle for the starting job. Kolb has that already in Philadelphia. There's also no way the Eagles would trade him to Washington; he's not Donovan McNabb.

The Vikings are in the running for McNabb, and the Cardinals probably are going to try to develop John Skelton. The Seahawks could be a possibility, but that just doesn't seem likely.

The Titans technically were looking for a starting quarterback, but with Jeff Fisher out now, Vince Young is going to stay, so go ahead and take the Titans out of any quarterback discussions.

The Dolphins seem like they would be a very good fit for Kolb because there really is no quarterback controversy there. All of the quarterbacks on that team are terrible.

The problem with Miami is the offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll, hasn't proved he can run an offense after two years in Cleveland that consistently produced some of the worst offensive game plans in the league.

The Dolphins really are a mess, and they could ruin Kolb's career very easily.

So Kolb could look to a team like the 49ers, who really are interested in winning now and think they can rebuild in a year or two. Trading for Kolb alleviates the need to draft a rookie quarterback and develop him.

The 49ers have a running back in Frank Gore and a receiver in Michael Crabtree, and if they get Kolb in a trade, they can focus on building the defense through the draft.

This would make San Francisco the preferred option for Kolb at this point. With Jim Harbaugh installed as the head coach, the 49ers have an opportunity to make the playoffs in 2011. No team in that division has a clear lead going into next season.

All four teams in the NFC West are rebuilding, and it's just a question of which team can pull the pieces together the quickest.

With Kolb running the plays in San Francisco, the 49ers would have the edge in that division to take on the Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals.
