Liverpool FC has confirmed on their official website that in the late hours of Friday evening they received a transfer request from star forward Fernando Torres. They also confirmed that they have rejected that request.

The latest development comes after the Reds rejected a £40 million bid from Chelsea for Torres on Thursday evening. Chelsea is thought to be currently considering a new bid for the forward in the region of £60 million.

Here are three quotes from today's media and Twitter:

Dan Walker of the BBC said: "It seems Torres has told Liverpool he wants to leave in this window. Big fight to hold on to one of the world's best."

Oliver Kay at The Times said: "It has been a season of false alarms, but it's clear that Liverpool face a very serious fight to keep Torres."

Liverpool fan, Dan Remidios said: "My anger with Torres is because he has left it so, so late. Something has happened. Why Chelsea too?"

More coming shortly.
