Fantasy Football Rankings: Michael Vick and the MVP of Each Position

Ethan NorofJan 26, 2011

Michael Vick led many fantasy football teams to a championship in the 2010-11 season.

However, there were several other contributors responsible for sustained success throughout the season.

While those that had Vick on the roster undoubtedly reached the playoffs, let's take a look at the other most notable contributors from this most recent campaign.

Michael Vick, Quarterback

Vick narrowly edges out preseason favorite Aaron Rodgers for the crown. After throwing just 13 passes in all of 2009, Vick had arguably the best season of his career as the Eagles starter this year.

With 3,018 yards passing, Vick posted the highest total of his career and also broke the 3,000-yard plateau for the first time in his career. While that isn't a ton of production through the air, his 676 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground help make up for that immensely.

With a 100.2 QB rating and 30 total touchdowns on the campaign, Vick is deservedly on his way to the Pro Bowl.

Arian Foster, Running Back

Just how good was Arian Foster? Adrian Peterson was second in terms of fantasy points produced from the running back position, and he was more than 80 points behind Foster.

Despite going unselected in the majority of standard drafts, Foster took advantage of a training camp injury to rookie Ben Tate and never looked back. Rushing for 1,616 yards and 16 TDs and averaging 4.9 YPC, Foster ran through any defense that he faced.

An amazing season for an incredible athlete, Foster is a bona fide first-round selection in every 2011 draft.

Brandon Lloyd, Wide Receiver

This was a rather tough decision between Lloyd, Roddy White and Dwayne Bowe, but ultimately Lloyd won out, and here is why.

Despite breaking out in a huge way and finally capitalizing on his incredible potential, Bowe put up the much-maligned donut in Weeks 13 and 14, critical to any team's playoff aspirations.

Additionally, Roddy White was strong this season, but outside of a couple 25-plus-point efforts, his production remained comparable with some other receivers in the league.

So why Lloyd? Not only did he shatter all of his previous career highs, but he came out of nowhere to do it. Producing a steady stream of points for his owners throughout the season, Lloyd singlehandedly propelled many bottom-feeding squads into the postseason with his brilliant breakout.

Jason Witten, Tight End

This would have easily gone to Antonio Gates, but his injury cost him crucial playing time down the stretch.

Although Witten is often thought of as formerly elite, this season was proof that he's still got plenty left in the tank. Posting his second straight season of at least 1,000 yards receiving, the Cowboys TE put up a career-high nine touchdowns this season.

He had extraordinary production down the stretch and greatly rewarded the owners that patiently kept him penciled in the lineup rather than searching for an option on the wire on a weekly basis.

Steelers Defense and Special Teams

How much explanation does this one need?

Despite not being the highest scoring defense and special teams unit in most standard leagues, there's no denying that they had the most impact on a weekly basis.

With 11 weeks of double-digit points in ESPN standard leagues, when is the last time any defensive unit was this good with such consistency for its owners?

David Akers, Kicker

David Akers, AKA Mr. Consistent.

Akers has been among the first fantasy football kickers selected off the board for about five years now.

Ever since he made the 2005 Pro Bowl and he and then Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri switched uniforms, Akers has been a favorite to insert into fantasy football lineups worldwide.

With 32 field goals on the campaign and 47 extra points, Akers averaged around nine points per contest, and that can be the difference between a pivotal win and a bone-crushing loss.

Who ever said kickers don't matter?
