Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz: Will the Fight Happen on April 16th?

edgar solorzanoJan 25, 2011

The undefeated Haitian-American welterweight warrior, Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KOs),  might be back in action on April 16th against Victor "Vicious" Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KOs).

Berto is coming off a tremendous TKO victory over Freddy Hernandez, while Ortiz's last battle ended up being a draw against Lamont Peterson. Whether Ortiz had a good or bad performance on December 11th, there's no doubt that both Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz are two of the hottest prospects in the welterweight division.

Golden Boy promotions and Lou DiBella are in talks at this moment, trying to make Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz reality for the fight fans. Although it sounds like a pretty interesting fight for the fans, don't get too excited yet. Berto's promoter, Lou DiBella, is already running into some walls that need to be removed. Andre Berto wants the fight at 147 pounds, while Golden Boy Promotions are asking for a 143-pound catch weight.

Lou DiBella stressed, "We're not doing a catch weight. Period. That's our position," DiBella stated. "I told them the catch weight was an issue. They asked for 143. It's for the welterweight title and our position is that it's at 147."

DiBella also stated that Berto is the superstar in that fight, and there's no reason why Andre Berto should go down to 143 pounds to fight Victor Ortiz.

"Ortiz weighed more in the ring for his last fight than Berto has ever weighed in the ring on the night of a fight, and he's a welterweight," DiBella said. "Ortiz isn't a smaller guy, and he's not a superstar. Why should Berto make any concessions on the weight? But I'm confident we can work it out."

If Golden Boy Promotions tries to make a 145-pound catch weight; DiBella could possibly agree. However, if they stick with the 143-pound catch-weight plan, the fight may not take place, and Andre Berto could possibly return in the ring against Selcuk Aydin (20-0, 15 KOs) on January 28th.

Since Aydin believes Andre Berto has been ducking him.

"If Berto still wants to duck me after almost two years he should just relinquish the title. He is not a real champion. He doesn't fulfill his obligations. He should stop wearing the belt that I should have stripped from him a long time ago. I wonder how he can even look into the mirror," Aydin stated.

If Lou DiBella and Richard Schaefer catch an agreement, both fighters, Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz, will have a major chance to reach the superstar level, since both warriors want the fight to happen.

However, it would only be a good fight if it's at the right weight. If Richard Schaefer agrees to have the fight at 147 pounds, I believe it would be a huge mistake risking it with a talented fighter like Ortiz who has been fighting in the 140s. I don't see Victor Ortiz being too sharp at 147 pounds, at least not against a fighter like Berto.

At this moment, the boxing world may not know if Berto-Ortiz will become reality on April 16th, but if both promoters reach an agreement, prepare to witness a bloody war that could shock the world.
