Scott Speed Survives Saturday Night Short Track Racing Finishing Eighth
Scott Speed and his No. 2 Red Bull crew left Salem, Indiana exhausted. After a hard fought eighth place finish with a damaged Toyota Camry car and extending his points lead to 90 points.
From the drop of the green flag, Sean Caisse, Scott Speed, and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. ran single file for the first 84 laps. Playing follow the leader, till Lap 85. When Caisse in the No. 01 Germain Racing car got caught behind lapped traffic. Allowing both Speed in the No. 2 Red Bull car and Stenhouse, Jr. in the No. 99 car sped past.
Speed would go onto lead for twelve laps. Before pitting under caution for fuel and tires.
The second half of the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 by advanced Auto Parts. Would turn into your classic short track race with tempers flaring, beating and banging of of each other.
Speed would have contact with Stenhouse, Jr. going down the backstretch and causing Stenhouse's to finish 17th and 26 laps down.
Speed would run in the top ten, all night. Which was amazing considering on lap 140, he got caught up in a multi-car wreck.
The race would be red flagged for the track cleanup. Speed had brought the damaged No. 2 to pit road. Which allowed his crew chief Patrick Donahue and his pit crew to access the car. State what tools where needed, patches made and lay out the plan for fixing the car.
His crew would repair his car, making several pit stops. Keeping him on the lead lap and restarting in ninth position.
Speed would gain one position in the final 54 laps and bring home his No. 2 Red Bull car in eighth place.
More importantly, his points lead is now 90 points over Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in second place. Speed's also lead in 14 0f 18 ARCA races this year and recorded his team's 13th consecutive Top Ten finish (eddiesharpracing.com).
Three races remain in the 2008 ARCA Re/Max season. The next race, is two weeks from now. At New Jersey Motorsports Park, the green flag drops at 1:00PM, Sept. 28th for the Loud Energy Drink 150.
