NFL Players Need a Vocal Leader to Step Up Now For CBA to Have a Chance

Mark HardinJan 24, 2011

Instead of inward fighting among NFL players, it would be of tremendous benefit for a successful CBA if the players rallied around their colleagues.

All eyes are on the players to see who will step up into the spotlight and take a leading role in getting a deal done expediently.

The players' "union" is in need of a true, unified voice and a few proactive vocal leaders to rally support and communicate the core issues and basic needs.  With the age of twitter accounts and bloggers and message boards, it is easy for rumors and misinformation to spread irresponsibly across cyberspace.

All players need to be accurately informed of the issues at play and specifically what it will mean to the immediate future and the long-range future of the players and of the league.

It is a delicate balancing act which has many areas of gray, which is where positive negotiating must take place.

After the players are well informed, they need to unify and look for a few vocal leaders to take the lead in portraying their stance to the NFL fans.  Communication can be a friend of a foe.  Poor communication or a lack of communication could create a long, laborious power struggle and war of words, which could end with money being lost for everyone.

The communicators, which could be effective leaders in this role, have yet to emerge, but I encourage that person or persons to do so quickly.  This person does not necessarily need to be just a vocal person.  Just talking without logic does not equate to effective communication.

It is not the time for trash talk or intimidating talk.  It is now the time for the players to act as one voice.
