Manny Pacquiao Making a Big Move from HBO to Showtime?

King JJan 21, 2011

For the last few days, the biggest news surrounding the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao, is it appears he will be fighting his next fight against Shane Mosley not on HBO, which he has made his career and home at for the majority of his prime career years but on the Showtime network.

Rumors and reports from boxing journalists and fight fans flooded the fight forums that Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley will indeed be on Showtime pay-per-view on May 7th, 2011.

Several reports from Sports Illustrated and ESPN also talked about this move as well.

Showtime and its major affiliate station CBS have a strong relationship with Bob Arum, president of Top Rank which would imply this strong rumor to be true.

Also the fact that Top Rank's other stars such as Juan Manuel Lopez and Miguel Cotto are now scheduled to fight on the Showtime network after making some of the biggest fights of their career on the HBO network, may imply Bob is trying to have his star fighters fight on Showtime from now on.

Cotto is slated to fight Ricardo Mayorga in another Showtime pay-per-view on March 12th, and Lopez is slated to fight on April 16th on Showtime as well.

Even though much of the media has been weighing in on what this big jump from HBO to Showtime means for Manny Pacquiao and the sport of boxing, Bob Arum himself has not yet confirmed if this is indeed 100 percent true or not.

If Manny Pacquiao does indeed become a Showtime network fighter, we can view this as Showtime once again having the biggest star in boxing as they did when they also had Mike Tyson.

However, many of us know this ultimately means it will be just another road block in the long grueling frustrating dream fight of Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever being made.

It is pretty common knowledge among the truly hardcore fight fans that Mayweather is with Al Haymon, and Haymon has a significant amount of power and influence with the HBO network hence Mayweather is the biggest star HBO has had for quite some time.

Which basically means we would have the major road block of Mayweather being a HBO fighter and Pacquiao being a Showtime fighter, which implies this to be yet another reason why the fight would never be made.

Yes, we do have your once in a generation network collaboration super mega fights such as the Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis fight, but it is rare that these two rival networks come together like that unless the money is just too big to refuse.

Will Mayweather/Pacquiao make money? That is a given. I think even people living under a rock even know this fight will shatter all records.

If Pacquiao is indeed now a Showtime fighter, then we the fans must prepare to wait even longer for the dream fight we all have been dying for the last four years or so.

What are some of your thoughts on this big network move from HBO to Showtime for Pacquiao if it is indeed true?
