Kevin Kolb Traded? Five Quarterbacks That Can Replace Him As Eagles Backup

Jason KarlJan 18, 2011

Micheal Vick, in all likelihood, will get hurt next year. His rough playing and forgetting how to slide, will cost him a few games.

The Eagles will be a playoff team next year, so every game will be important. If Vick is hurt, the Eagles will need a capable backup.

They need a quarterback that can come in and manage the game well enough to keep the Eagles in the game.

That backup QB would be Kevin Kolb, but he will be traded this off season. His stock is at its highest right now and there are many teams that need a capable quarterback.

Since Vick is injury prone, the backup job will be attractive to many journeymen quarterbacks.

So here are 5 free agent quarterbacks that can backup Micheal Vick.

No. 5: Rex Grossman

Even though Rex Grossman is considered one of the leagues worst quarterbacks, he actually performed admirably when he took over for Donovan McNabb.

Grossman threw seven touchdowns in three starts for the Redskins. He finished the season with an 81 quarterback rating, certainly good enough for a backup quarterback.

Unless Mike Shanahan keeps Grossman as a starter, Grossman is likely to leave.

No. 4: Billy Volek

When Volek is given the chance to play, he performs well.

Many remember Volek when he came into the 2008 AFC Divisional Playoffs and led a comeback victory against the defending Super Bowl Champions Indianapolis Colts.

Volek is now 34 years old and teams will not be giving him a starting opportunity.

No. 3: Alex Smith

Alex Smith has had his chance to start and has shown absolutely nothing.

One of his greatest strengths is his accuracy.

Smith now will have to accept a backup quarterback role to continue his career. He threw for 14 touchdowns this year and is still pretty young at 26 years old.

He would be a solid for the West Coast Offense.

No. 2: Marc Bulger

Marc Bulger was supposed to be an elite quarterback for many years during his days with St. Louis.

Injuries derailed his career. He could still be a capable backup to Vick; like the way he did with Joe Flacco in Baltimore.

Bulger is 33 years old and could be a great fit in this offense.

No. 1: Kerry Collins

5 of 5

Collins is the anti-Vick. He is so immobile in the pocket, it is very funny watching him play.

Nevertheless, Collins showed he can still be a starter. He threw 14 touchdowns as opposed to 8 interceptions this season.

He will be a tough free agent signing considering the Titans may want him back to remain the starter. If the Eagles were smart, they would attempt to pry away the savvy veteran quarterback from the Titans.
