What happen to FINISHING.Bears fall to the Panthers.

Justin BakerSep 14, 2008

Right out of the gate no one could have anticipated what would have happened. With a huge special teams play and a touchdown due to a blocked punt the Bears were on there way to a 2-0 season. Going into half time the Bears had the lead but this would not be the Bears day. As strong as the Bears came out they fell. As Chicago fans watched the offense turn over balls during critical moments in the game clearly something was going wrong. What went wrong...was it the turn overs, was it the lack of pressure by the defense in the second half, or was it the bad, stupid, moronic play calls by Ron Turner and Kyle Orton. The Bears gave a fight I will not strip that of them the same way they got the balls striped today however, there were many aspects of today's game that need to be looked at and addressed. Not only did the Bears commit way to many penalties they turned the ball over on crucial plays and moments that could have ended up as points. What is most frustrating is the fact that today Forte was rushing like a mad man and on 3rd and one with less then two minutes remain and only down by 3 Kyle Orton changed the play at the line to an out pass to Marty Booker. In this situation get the first down then worry about getting down the field. It is unforgivable to make an error of this magnitude. Run it on 2nd and 1, 3rd and 1, and if at this point you haven't got the first down run it on 4th down. Somthing that many people over look is that all the WR and TE were lined up for a run play, everyone in that stadium could guess what the Bears were doing, they needed to spread the WR out so that they Panthers have to account for them. The fact that in the most important run plays of the game Matt Forte was not given the ball is a unforgivable call. Some can say the Bears gave it there all and just got beat but that isn't the case. As I have said before the Bears are there own worst enemy and they simply beat themselves the game was theirs to win. How many times have we seen that out pass that amounts to nothing just like the screen pass that for some reason the Bears can not accomplish successfully. The bottom line is this, the Bears played one half of good football and one half of last years style of football. If the Bears want to continue to have success in games Kyle Orton must be able to complete passes beyond 5-10 yards. With a weak wide receiving core the other phases of the game must play perfect ball in order for the Bears to find success. Another aspect that we all can agree on is that field position was a huge factor in this game. It is hard to go down the field when your WR cant break away let alone when you are backed up inside your own 20 for most of the starts of the drives. I hope for the home opener the Bears find other ways to move the ball down field. And right now the number one issue less penalties and better play calling. If these things continue it is going to be a long season my friends...Bears fall the to the Panthers lets hope they can rebound next week. Until then...Bear down Bears...Bear Down.
