
NHL Power Rankings: Coyotes Jump into Playoff Picture While Blackhawks Heat Up
Dallas has remained the class of the Pacific. They have only lost one game in January.
The Blackhawks and Predators continue to vie for the second spot in the Central.
Chicago has the upper hand with a 6-3 win on Sunday.
The Coyotes are heating up. They refuse to go away in the perplexing Pacific.
The Sharks snapped a six-game losing streak by defeating St. Louis on Saturday (check).
San Jose has too much talent to be in free fall like this.
John Tavares' hat trick helped the Islanders snap a three-game losing streak, but that team continues to sit in the cellar.
Jussi Jokinen has four goals in his last three games, helping the 'Canes, who are one point from the playoff threshold, to get into the postseason picture.
Florida has the fourth best penalty kill in the league and a Top 10 defense. Too bad the Cats can't score...
30. Edmonton Oilers

The Oil dropped four on their recent five-game road trip.
However, they were able to beat the slumping Sharks 5-2.
29. New Jersey Devils

Two wins over Tampa Bay are surprising.
Losing to the Panthers in Florida immediately after wasn't.
28. New York Islanders

The Islanders snapped their three-game losing streak when they defeated Buffalo on Saturday.
John Tavares had a hat trick.
Next week, they face the Sabres twice after playing New Jersey and Washington.
Sunday's contest in Buffalo will be on NBC.
27. Ottawa Senators

The Senators, typically a powerful team offensively, have the second worst goals per game average (2.2) in the league.
Their win over the Islanders on Thursday is their only win in January.
26. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Jackets only have obtained points in two games in January.
Ironically, both games were against the Wings.
They beat Detroit in a shootout on Friday and lost to them in overtime on Saturday.
25. St. Louis Blues

The Blues only have one win in January, which came against Los Angeles on Thursday.
On Saturday, they lost to the slumping Sharks and have to play the Kings and Wings next week.
24. San Jose Sharks

The Sharks got their second win in January against St. Louis on Saturday, snapping a six-game losing streak.
The bad news is they played six of their past eight games at home and spend a significant amount of time in late January and early February on the road.

A loss to the Islanders is tough, especially because they have to play them twice next week.
The Sabres open up the week against Montreal on Versus (Tuesday).

After winning four in a row, the Leafs were routed by the red-hot Coyotes in Glendale (5-1) and lost to Calgary in the shootout.

The flames have earned points in the three games they've played so far on their four-game road trip.
However, those games have come against Carolina, Ottawa and Toronto.
They finish up the trip in Montreal on Monday.

The Thrash may be cooling off after their hot start.
Despite having a Top 10 offense (seventh in NHL) and power play (sixth), Atlanta is getting burnt in their own end.
As a result, they've lost four straight.

Minnesota owns the eighth best power play in the league.
However, cannot score and snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday with a 4-0 win over Vancouver.
They start a four-game road trip against Edmonton on Tuesday.

The Avs have the league's fourth best offense and ninth best power play but need to play better defense to compete in the West.
They finish January at home with five straight games in the Pepsi Center.
17. Los Angeles Kings

The Kings rocked some aesthetically-pleasing throwbacks against the Oilers on Saturday
They won the contest 5-2.
LA has a Top 10 defense and penalty kill but needs to string together some wins in order to climb their way to the top of the Pacific.

The Panthers have the league's 10th best defense and the fourth best penalty kill.
They've also won three straight against Washington, Nashville and New Jersey.

The Hurricanes have won three of their last four.
Jussi Jokinen has four goals in his last three games.
Carolina is currently one point outside the playoff picture in the East.
14. Montreal Canadiens

Montreal has been solid on defense and special teams but is only mustering 2.5 goals per game.
However, they have prevailed with an anemic offense.
The Habs have won four of their last five.
13. Anaheim Ducks

Owners of the league's third best power play, the Ducks continue to compete in the Pacific.
However, they were exposed by the Desert Dogs on Saturday. They lost 6-2 in Glendale.
12. New York Rangers

With stingy D, the Rangers are looking like legitimate contenders in the East.
Too bad they're in the same division as the Flyers and Penguins...
11. Nashville Predators

The Preds have been savage in their own end.
Their defense (second in NHL) and penalty kill (third) has allowed this team to compete in the Central.
Hopefully for the Nashville faithful, their 6-3 loss in Chicago has not devastated this otherwise impressive team.
10. Chicago Blackhawks

Tied for second in the Central with Nashville, the Hawks are officially back.
With a Top 10 offense, the league's best power play and an improved defense, the Blackhawks are putting themselves in position to defend their title.
9. Phoenix Coyotes

Record: 23-13-9 (55 pts)
Don't count these Coyotes out.
Glendale's finest have won four straight.
However, they will be tested by San Jose, Nashville and Los Angeles (twice) next week.
8. Washington Capitals

A commitment to defense (ninth in NHL) has kept these Caps in contention.
Currently, they are tied with Tampa Bay for the Southeast Division lead.
However, their win in Ottawa snapped a recent three-game losing streak.
7. Tampa Bay Lighting

The Lighting need work on defense but are otherwise well-rounded.
They were able to top Washington 3-0, but losses to New Jersey and Carolina hurt.
6. Boston Bruins

The Bruins are finally playing to their potential.
Their eighth best offense is complimenting their defense (league's best) and a solid penalty kill (sixth).
As a result, they Bruins had a three-game win streak going before losing to Pittsburgh on Saturday.
5. Dallas Stars

Record: 27-13-5 (59 pts)
The Pacific's finest are playing well defensively (seventh in league) and on the power play (ninth) but need to do a better job killing penalties.
The Stars have only one loss, which came in a shootout to New York, in January.
4. Pittsburgh Penguins

Record: 28-14-4 (60 pts)
The Penguins still need work on the power play, but have a Top Five offense (fifth), defense (fourth) and penalty kill (first).
They avenged their loss to Boston on Saturday with a 3-2 win on Saturday—reinforcing their perception as an elite team in the East.
3. Philadelphia Flyers

Record: 29-11-5 (63 pts)
The Flyers remain at the apex of the Atlantic Division due to their second-best offense but need to work on other aspects of their game.
This team has only one loss, to Boston, in January.
2. Detroit Red Wings

The Wings remain atop the competitive Central due to great offense (first in NHL) and a great power play (fourth).
However, they need to play better in their own end.
The Wings travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday in what should be an epic showdown between two powerhouse teams.

This is the league's best team, hands down.
