Mitch's Week 3 College Football Picks Recap
When does going 9-11-1 against the spread feel much worse?; when some of your picks aren't even in the game and lose by scores of 59-0, 35-3, and 69-17.
We had our first sub-.500 week of the season, and like anyone who picks games, we knew it was going to happen eventually. It brings our season total to a still very respectable 38-28-1 against the spread and up a nice 10 1/2 units.
It was a solid reminder that no matter how much homework we do and how many variables we consider, it's still just a bunch of 18-year-old kids we're expecting a lot out of. Let's look at what happened.
Cal came out flat at Maryland and by the time they woke up, they were in too far of a hole to catch up. This is one we'll be scratching out head over all season. Loss
We expected a high-scoring affair when Missouri and Nevada took the field but thought the hefty point spread would have kept it close. We were wrong, as it would have taken the Boston Celtics to score enough points to stay with the Tigers this week. Loss
We figured that Georgia Tech would be able to stay within the spread against Virginia Tech, and they did. Have we mentioned that Paul Johnson is a great Coach yet today? Win
When looking at Penn State, we said that they were scoring points in bunches this year. When we looked at Syracuse we said they were giving up points in bunches. Both happened again. Win
We thought we could change our vibe on East Carolina by picking with them. Of course, it was Tulane who finally covered against them. Loss
We thought we were doomed with Iowa State as the waning seconds ticked down; maybe Kirk Ferentz had the points as well, as the intentional safety his Iowa team took gave us our cover. Win
We knew we wouldn't see much offense from South Carolina, and we didn't. What we didn't expect was to get no offense out of Georgia. Push
We have had Duke pegged as one of our more improved teams this season since our preview; we just thought Navy would handle them this week; they didn't. Loss
We thought Michigan was the better of the two teams in South Bend yesterday, but when you fumble that many times, you aren't going to beat anyone, not even Notre Dame. Loss
We liked Air Force because we knew Houston had trouble stopping the run; they did, and the Falcons are still running. Win
Oklahoma ended up being one of my big plays yesterday out here in Las Vegas; I knew Washington would make me proud and not tackle worth anything. Win
We liked Rice in the battle of unbeaten teams yesterday as we saw value in the points. The points paid nothing, as it was a Vandy cover. Loss
A lot of people were big on Fresno State this week; while we like the Bulldogs, we knew Wisconsin was a better team, even on the road. Win
I couldn't believe most people didn't know Western Kentucky was fresh out of 1-AA; we did and we played Alabama big time. Win
Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano said he wasn't concerned at halftime with his team's play; we saw a QB throwing into quadruple coverage and North Carolina wide receivers wide open all day, so we were. Loss
We liked the idea of Kansas getting points in what we thought was going to be a close one. We needed all of them as South Florida won the game but didn't cover by 1/2 point. Win
Oregon played so poorly in the first half, we thought Purdue had it in the bag. The Ducks came back to win but didn't cover. Loss
BYU beat UCLA 59-0, is there anything we can really say about this? Loss
The bulk of the TCU-Stanford game was a lot closer than we thought it would be. Not close enough in the end for those with the Cardinal. Win
Illinois started strong like they were going to cover easily. They played the rest of the game slow and UL-Lafayette almost won the thing. Loss
We thought Ohio State would come out and play smash mouth against USC. They got their mouths smashed, all right. Loss
Well that's already in the history books and we'll continue our pattern of daily content and picks all week long. We're hoping to rebound nicely.
See and hear the rest of what Mitch has to say recapping the weekend at The College Football Place.
