Friday Night Classic: South Florida Beats Kansas on the Last Kick of the Game

Alex FergusonSep 13, 2008

If you weren't watching Friday Night's KU-South Florida game, then you probably had better things to do.

But here at the View From North America, we pride ourselves on taking a little bit of an interest in the game of college football, and thanks to TiVo (it's Sky+ in the UK), we got to witness the greatest game of our lives.

It's funny, because in the first half it was all about Kansas. Quarterback Todd Reesing was in the same sort of form that made him one of the best quarterbacks of 2007.

South Florida didn't seem to have any answer. The Bulls' quarterback Matt Grothe was dreadful, and there seemed to be only one winner on this balmy night in Tampa. 20-10 KU at the half.

I can only wonder what Jim Leavitt, USF's coach said at halftime. I can't think it would have been overly polite.

In the UK, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was well-known for his half-time "rockets" at his players, which magically seemed to turn things around. Methinks Levitt did the same, and then watched as South Florida piled up a 200-plus yard, 17-point third quarter to give the Bulls a 27-20 lead.

In the fourth quarter, it was simply a question of trying to take a breath between plays. AJ Love (what a name!) took in a 25-yard bomb from Grothe and ran in the extra yards to give the Bulls a seemingly unassailable 14-point lead. Suddenly, KU looked like they could lose by about 30.

But, as was the case for much of last season, Kansas are no longer a joke of a team.

Reesing found wide receiver Jonathan Wilson at the back of the end-zone to make it a 34-27 ballgame. One South Florida three-and-out later, and KU drove down the field. Reesing then found Angus Quigley to tie the game at 34.

Wow.

KU got the ball back again, and a Jayhawks suddenly seemed to have the last laugh. Reesing's throws again were accurate, and the South Florida Bulls could do nothing.

Then Reesing got greedy and threw an interception. The stadiumwent crazy.

A few plays and one kick later, and No. 19 South Florida had upset No. 13 Kansas 37-34.

USC and Ohio State, eat your hearts out.
