Report: Philadelphia Eagles Fire Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott
According to ESPN.com, the Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
In a crazy season for the Eagles, there was much scrutiny about the play of the defense. Repeatedly throughout the season, fans, including myself, questioned the coaching ability of McDermott.
However, in a press conference following the end of the Eagles season, head coach Andy Reid said that McDermott would be back in the same position next year. Things that Reid says don’t always to turn out to be true, as we’ve seen in the past. This time around, a coach ended up leaving the organization rather than a player.

I don’t think there will be a whole lot of people who will be upset by this move. As I said, McDermott was at fault many times this season. He failed to make a key adjustment this year against the Titans and also had many games where he started aggressively on defense and found success but let off the gas as the game went on.
McDermott was put into this position due to the passing of former defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. He did pretty well last year with what he had, but really struggled this season.
Although the Eagles made the playoffs in both seasons he was the defensive coordinator, you have to take into account what the offense was doing. In 2009, the offense scored more points than they ever had before, then broke that record again in 2010. With numbers like that, you don’t need to have a shutdown defense.
The next question will be who the Eagles choose to replace him. I think the early front-runner will be Dick Jauron. However, the Eagles did allow him to take an outside interview earlier this week for a defensive coordinator position.
What are your thoughts on the move?
