New England Patriots View Rex Ryan as Irrelveant Material

Leslie MonteiroJan 11, 2011

Rex Ryan was at it again.

Yesterday, he described Sunday’s game with Patriots coach Bill Belichick as personal. He used that same tactic from last week with Peyton Manning.

He also took digs at Tom Brady by saying Manning would have watched the Jets if the Colts had a bye week. This was in response to the Patriots quarterback watching “Lombardi” Saturday night in New York.

If Ryan thought Belichick and Brady would take a shot at him, he was sorely mistaken.

Belichick responded by saying he and Ryan will not be making blocks, tackles, runs or carries. He mentioned the game is going to be about the players. That was an indirect way of saying Ryan’s talk is hot air. It also meant Ryan wants to make this about himself.

For further emphasis, Belichick said he is worried about his own team. He is not interested in talking about what other teams do. In other words, he can care less about Ryan’s bluster.

Brady had nothing to say in an interview on WEEI yesterday.

Honestly, the responses by Belichick and Brady were beautiful. There’s no reason for them to get caught up with Ryan’s act.

It’s easy for them to laugh at Ryan. With them winning championships and beating the Jets all these years, they can afford to ignore the Jets head coach.

Don’t confuse their ignorance with apathy. The Patriots are motivated to beat the Jets. They just let their work speak for itself, which is the right thing to do.

Ryan, though, comes off self-centered here. He comes off as a guy who is jealous of someone’s success.

Ryan uses the backhanded compliment approach when he talks about the Patriots coach. He talks about how his counterpart is going to learn to respect him and his team. He talks about how he has to do everything possible to beat Belichick.

Ryan can talk all he wants. This is what he is. His players love that, and it makes them go out and play extra hard for him. He can’t change for who he is.

With that said, going out and talking about Belichick is crazy. Tom Coughlin never talked about the Patriots or their coach on Super Bowl week in 2008. He spent more time talking about his team’s preparation that week, and it paid off when the Giants beat the Patriots that year.

There’s no question coaches will prepare these players. Still, it’s all about execution by the players.

The Jets did not lose to the Patriots because of coaching last month. They lost because they were outclassed and outplayed by the Patriots that night. The quarterback stunk, and Brady torched the Jets defense.

If the Jets play like that on Sunday, it will be the same old story. The Patriots will run up the score if there is an opportunity.

Also, why does Ryan think Belichick cares what he is talking about? The Patriots coach does not respect anyone. That’s his right. For Ryan to go on and on, it’s a fruitless exercise.

Here’s how the Jets can get Belichick’s attention. Win on Sunday.

If the Jets win at Gillette Stadium, this will bother Belichick for a long time. It’s one thing for him to get over losing to the Giants. The Patriots won many Super Bowls before, and the head coach has a good relationship with the Giants. It’s another thing to lose to a team that he despises.

There’s nothing worse than Belichick watching highlights of Jets celebrating the entire summer.

A playoff win would convince the Patriots to view the Jets as a threat instead of a nuisance. Until then, this is just useless clutter.

This will be a good game. It’s hard to believe the game will be lopsided. The Jets are going to play better than they did last time.

Still, it’s going to be tough. The Patriots have too many weapons on offense for Brady to use. They have an edge at quarterback.

Sanchez has been enigmatic at times. He can make plays, but he is not going to throw that many touchdowns as Brady.

Brady can be affected, but the Jets don’t have a pass rush to stop him. If they did, the Jets could win this game.

It’s not happening. It will be shocking if the Jets win on Sunday. Somehow, it’s hard to believe Belichick and Brady will let this happen at their turf.

This is why the Patriots don’t need to respond. They worry about playing football. They don’t get caught up with media games. They have other issues to worry about.

Ryan is not changing for anyone. He will keep going at it with the Patriots as long as he is coaching. The Jets love this stuff.

The Patriots like it too. They view it as envy.
