NFL Playoffs: The Jets Simply Don't Have the Firepower To Defeat the Patriots

Michael FitzpatrickJan 11, 2011

The New York Jets talk a big game, that’s for sure.

Heck, if you’ve ever heard Rex Ryan speak to the media, you’d think that he was the one with three Super Bowl rings and not Bill Belichick.

Defensively speaking, the Jets can walk the walk.

But as we all know, the team that puts the most points on the board when the game clock strikes 0:00 in the fourth quarter will advance to the AFC Championship game, which is precisely why New England will find themselves just one game away from their fifth Super Bowl appearance in 10 years come Sunday night.

During the 2010 season, the Patriots averaged 32.4 points per game, which ranked first in the league by nearly five points per game.

The Jets have scored more than 32 points in a game just three times all season.

Plain and simple, Tom Brady and the Patriots are going to put more points on the board than Mark Sanchez and the Jets could ever dream of scoring during a playoff game.

The Patriots may not score 32 points on Sunday afternoon, but they won’t need to.  A mere 21 points will probably be more than enough to knock off the Jets in Foxboro’s hostile environment, where the Jets have had about as much success as President Obama has had in the Oval Office.

The Jets only hope is that Sanchez may have gained some much needed confidence during his late fourth quarter drive against the Indianapolis Colts last weekend.

The Jets defense and special teams will also need to put some points on the board on Sunday afternoon.

If the Jets are to win on Sunday, it will be in an unconventional way—punt returns for touchdowns, fumble recovers, pick-sixes, etc.

There is no doubt that the Jets are gritty competitors and truly believe that they deserve to be representing the AFC in Dallas in less than a month.

However, unless the right arm of Tom Brady goes missing sometime between now and Sunday afternoon, the Jets simply don’t have the firepower to outscore New England in Foxboro.

For a team that has constantly said it’s Super Bowl or bust…bust is looking like the more likely scenario.
