Notre Dame's Winning Seasons: The True Story Behind Irish "Success"

Isaac LuberSep 12, 2008

Although last year was a bad season, and this year also looks poor for the Fighting Irish, they have had a lot of success in the years before that.  Why?  Their pathetic strength of schedule.

Every year, Notre Dame plays teams like Army, Navy, Air Force, North Carolina, UCLA, Michigan State, San Diego State, and many other pansy and mediocre teams.

In 2006, Notre Dame went 10-2 in the regular season.  Their two losses were to the only decent teams on their schedule, USC and Michigan.  They received a BCS bid and played LSU in the Sugar Bowl.  Most sports analysts were predicting LSU to win, but not by much.  LSU dominated and completely crushed an overrated Irish team.

The year before that, Notre Dame went 9-2 in the regular season, beating all the pansies and losing to the good teams on their schedule.  They went to play Ohio State in a BCS bowl.  Once again, Notre Dame was crushed, even though they were projected to win by many people.

Notre Dame is not a good team.  Ever since their independent schedule turned from decent and good teams to mediocre and pansy teams, they have been the most consistently overrated team in all of college football.

When you watch ESPN and hear Lee and Kirk talk about how good Notre Dame is, you have to realize that they clearly aren't doing their homework.  Their strength of schedule is the worst in all of Division I football, and just because they squeeze by a cupcake team does not mean they are good.

Almost every year Notre Dame is in the preseason Top 25, and sometimes in the top five.  Through the first half of their season, they beat bad teams like San Diego State and Army, which boosts their ranking.  Then they lose to USC and Michigan, and sometimes to UCLA or Michigan State, and they drop.  But they never drop out of the Top 25.

Then they go to a bowl game and get demolished.

The success of Notre Dame has been all fake.  If they want to be good and not clearly overrated, then maybe they should play better teams like LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, and Texas every year.

Or maybe they should just join a BCS conference and play a somewhat tough schedule.  If they ever joined a good conference, they would show their true colors.  They would be 3-9 or 4-8 every year.

So when you look at Notre Dame and say, "Wow!  Look at their record.  They must be good"—remember, they don't play anyone.

Notre Dame is overrated, and unless they make their schedule tougher, they don't deserve to be in the Top 25...EVER!
