UFC Titles on the Line.......When convenient?

Todd JacksonSep 11, 2008

I like many of you have dumped countless dollars into Pay Per View events put on by the UFC over the years.  Probably enoughto put one of my kids through college, or at least some decent BJJ classes.

One thing that never sat right with me, and more so recently, has been paying for a non title fight.  Correct me if I am mistaken please but aren't there five weight classes?

In my opinion the simple math would allow for at least one title fight every other month.  Am I asking too much?

I understand injuries and yes sometimes politics get in the way of these clashes.  My bigger point here is this.  Over the last three years and in particular over the last three seasons of the TUF show we find ourselves on hold waiting for the drama of the show to unfold while UFC gold is put on hold.  I understand that the weight classes have shifted so as not to tie up one particular division too long but who decides what is too long for a title to go un-defended?

I for one believe anything longer than six months is too long.  This is not a dig on the fighters themselves.  They are making a living in a very tuff industry.  No pun intended.  Point being look at the mess created by putting our interim heavyweight on the show.  Now he will come second in pursuit of a title he should be next in line for.  Possibly not getting a shot at all if Mir can beat him.  Both of the fighters mentioned are going to be second to a guy who has paid as much dues in the UFC as Jenna Jameson.

Take Mr. Matt Serra for example.  By the time he defended his title he had it for over a year without either being capable or physically ready to defend it.

Mr. Rampage Jackson took ten months from fight to fight while I got to pay to watch non title fights.  Sure some of those fights had implications for who was next in line but many didn't.

My very basic point here is why do the powers that be put these guys off and put us off from being able to see who is really deserving of the title?  In my opinion the coaches on the TUF shows should be the top two contenders to whatever belt they so choose to build the show after.

It is the responsibility of the UFC to keep the line moving.  Sometimes the divisions are weak, as is the HW division at this time but wouldn't that be the perfect call to bring up a heavy weight TUF show?  Let one of the four men in contention for one title duke it out over the next six months while we get a glimpse of the future?  Instead of having to watch the here and now suspended.  Bottom line is, if Nog hadn't been casted as a coach he would be fighting Couture and I don't care who you are, that is the fight that should be happening next in our HW division hands down.  It cant happen because the interim champ is on hold.

The UFC is the best but sometimes we suffer the marketing a bit too much as the consumers.  For our money we should be getting the very best the UFC has to offer in every way.  Would Matt Serra have held that belt so long, would Rampage have held the belt over that time.  Did some unlucky contender miss out on his chance to earn his shot at the title over a show built around up and comers.  I don't think Rampage's or Nog's coaching skills should take precedence over their ability to defend their titles.

I hope I haven't crossed any battle lines with TUF show followers here.  Its just my opinion.  For my moneys worth, I want a minimum of two title defenses a year from any champion.  I think some of these champions would agree.  Rampage even said it after his loss to Forrest.  He will never take that much time off again.  Why do I have to pay to watch Bisping Lebin when by that time there will be two to three title holders who haven't defended their titles in months depending on how you look at it.

In closing we have to follow the lead of the UFC and support their choices and enjoy what they offer us or move on to something better.  I dont see that happening and will continue to support the organization and the fighters.  I just wish there was more consistancy to the scheduling of championship fights.  Its a bit random and that should not be the case when there are healthy and able title holders waiting to fight.
