PLAYOFFS: THE WAY IT SHOULD BE!

playoffans.com

I originally thought a playoff should include 24 teams but since that time I have changed my mind and believe a playoff should include 16 teams. We need to include the conference champion from each and every conference. This will actually make the statement true that every game will count. You will no longer start the season with only a handful of teams that are in the running for the championship.

NO ONE STARTS THE SEASON HOPING TO MAKE IT TO JUST ANY BCS GAME! EVERYONE WANTS TO BE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!

In this case, every team will start the season with a chance to be the CHAMPION. They must win their conference to be guaranteed a spot in the tournament. The other spots would be filled using a selection committee. No need to fly bowl representatives all over the country to watch games so they can pretend they are picking the best team to be in their bowl. When it really comes down to who they think will draw in the most fans and highest TV rating.

We would allow up to three teams from the same conference to be at-large teams if they are all ranked in the top 10 at the end of the season. The independents will be eligible if they are in the top 15. The conference champions will be ranked first as long as they are ranked in the top 15 at the end of the season. This gives more meaning to winning your conference. You may or may not have a more difficult game. The conference champions that are not in the top 15 will be ranked in whatever order the selection committee deems they deserve. It is our belief that any team ranked in the top 15 at the end of the season could reasonably beat any other team in the top 15. This is something no one knows because it has never been given a chance. Maybe Boise Statecould have beaten all but the top 2 teams two years ago. No one will ever know because TV ratings and power hungry people are in control. All we hear is they are from a small conference and can’t do it year after year. Maybe if we took away the BCS conference recruiting advantage, we would find the BCS conference teams can’t do it year after year.

In addition to the Championship bracket we would create a secondary bracket of an additional 16 teams. These teams would be playing for an Invitational Championship. They would draw in millions of fans and would get the same attention. This way we would include 32 teams in the post season and this bracket would not have as many guaranteed spots. We would set up the games so that the semi-final games for both brackets are played on January 1st. Who knows who could be playing in any one of the four games. The biggest advantage to this system is that we would still get to wake up on New Years Day and watch FOUR College Football games that really COUNT.

We would have the first two rounds of games played at the home field for the higher seed. We would go along with the idea of the semi-final games being played at the four major bowl sites but we don’t know if that would be entirely necessary. The whole reason the Rose Bowl was started was just a big marketing campaign to advertise how nice it was in California in the winter time. The other bowls came to be because you had entrepreneurs who knew they could make money off of another bowl. The Rose Bowl has a long tradition which is the reason we should probably maintain it. The only reason other bowls have been created recently is to try and capitalize on the money that could be made in college football by having another game. I think all control and money from those games should be taken from them and given to the people who deserve it.

THE COLLEGES WHO MAKE IT ALL POSSIBLE!

For this reason I think a major playoff system needs to be started and shouldn’t be eased in over time. It is best to go to a 16 team playoff and stop all the talk and give control to the NCAA. It is about the schools, kids, and alumni.
