NFL: Week 1

Brandon WrightSep 9, 2008

Sunday Review: The roller coaster ride begins...

If you play fantasy football, then you know the roller coaster I am refering to.

Thursday night the Giants game out and looked like they were going to annihilate the Redskins, but went cold later in the game. Eli Manning looked more like Peyton then Peyton did in the beginning of the game. Should be interesting to see how he plays the rest of the season!

Tom Brady goes down with a knee injury and we are still waiting to see if he is done for the season. This will be the biggest disappointment of the year if that is the case. No one likes to see someone get injured, especially one of the best QB's of all time. Plus, every other team in the league that has the Pat's on their schedule wants to play them with Tom in the game. If you are going to beat a team like that, you want to play them at their best too!

Peyton Manning looked good for not playing any pre-season games and having that bum knee. But the Colts lost to the Bears? Huh? There went most people’s pools! But, the Bears defense looked amazing! They won that game with intensity... oh, and a young rookie running back that should make a lot of noise this year! If you don’t know Forte from Tulane, Google him, he amassed ridiculous numbers in college last year.

Favre was Favre! That is all there was to it! Will he need to play better going forward, of course... but he got the win and extended a few NFL records while at it! With Tom Brady going down in New England, the Jets may suddenly be the new favorites in the AFC East! But they have a lot to prove still... after all, the only beat the Dolphins!

Vince Young went down too... Not a good week to be a QB I take it! (Brady Croyle from the Chiefs was injured as well) In the Titans case, they got the win, barley... but that is a great thing since they had a dismal pre-season showing. Hopefully the injury to Vince will not take too long to heal; it is already listed as about 2-4 weeks, so let's hope he can speed it up!

A great showing by a revived Philadelphia Eagles team lead by a healthy McNabb produced the biggest blowout of the weekend. McNabb put up 361 yards and 3 TD's in the 38-3 route. Rookie DeSean Jackson had 6 receptions and 106 yards... this may only be a small taste of what to come from him. Jackson is also a kick return and punt return man, and a good one at that.

Pittsburg put up great numbers as well. Big Ben was efficient having only 1 incomplete pass out of 14 attempts with 137 yards and 2 TD's; both to Hines Ward. But, the star of the show was Willie Parker... Parker took 25 carries for 138 yards and 3 TD's. The Houston Texans were not much of a match in this one.

Overall, it was a good week in the NFL. A lot of rookies breaking out and veterans coming back from not so stellar seasons to injuries that change the power rankings around the league, we seem to be in for another great season!

Two Monday night games today... Game 1: Vikings at Packers - Aaron Rodgers making his first start for the Pack, time to see if he can live up to the legend he is replacing! Adrian Peterson looks to pick up where he left of the 2007 season. Game 2: Broncos at Raiders - JaMarcus Russell looks to turn the page on the Raiders recent disappointing seasons with the help of top pick Darren McFadden and a fierce defense. The Broncos have won 8 of the last 10 meeting between the two teams however!
