EPL: Sunday Match Previews for January 2nd
Chelsea vs Aston Villa
Chelsea will really need to win here; the Villans have lost six of their last eight visits to Stamford Bridge and won none, so the history of these games is in their favour to add to the numerous other factors which are set to help them romp to victory in what should be a walk in the park for the home side.
Chelsea are not in a particularly good patch to be kind, but they did manage to scrape a win in their last match and they are playing against a side which has been playing awful recently, so perhaps things may just be turning around for the Londoners. One thing is certain though, nothing short of a win will be acceptable to the fans and in terms of keeping Chelsea’s title hopes going.
What can be said about Villa? Not much good, unfortunately. In their last five away matches they have only managed to score one goal, and to boot they have lost five of their last six matches in the league. Aston Villa need a win, but this is not likely to be the match where they are going to get it from, so if you’re a Villa supporter you may not want to watch this match.
Wigan vs Newcastle
Wigan are not going to look forward to this match, despite being at home and even after managing to claw a draw from Arsenal in their last match, they do look at something of a disadvantage against Newcastle.
The fact that the side have only managed to win twice at home all season does not bode well for their hopes of picking up a victory against Newcastle. The only bonus for Wigan is the fact that Newcastle have done pretty badly this month, actually taking the fewest points out of any team in December, only managing to win one match. The odds are that this match will end in a draw, seeing as neither of the sides seems to have the ability to set themselves up as the winners.
Newcastle are not doing well at the moment, however if you look at their overall away form it is better than most, which might not be much of a statement, all things considered this season. If they can get a draw out of this match, then that will be a good result, but if anybody is going to sneak a win out of this encounter it may just be the Magpies.
