Vikings, Packers: What We Learned, What We Wish We Didn't Learn

Ryan NelsonSep 9, 2008

The Vikings-Packers' match-up in week one showed us many things. Not the least of which is that the NFL rules committee needs to reevaluate their referee's performance from this game. There were so many bad calls in this game that even my blind great grandmother could have seen it.

Aaron Rodgers can get it done. I look at the game and I think that one of the biggest factors was Aaron Rodgers' play. Rodgers looked like a veteran, and he can play. The biggest play was his first pass down field to Greg Jennings. Rodgers' throw and read were amazing. He can get it done. Green Bay is Mr. Rodgers' neighborhood.

Tarvaris Jackson is a good quarterback. Take away the score, take away the last throw, take away the fact that the Vikes were playing Green Bay. You will find that Tarvaris Jackson is a good, solid quarterback. He is still young. He has time to develop. Jackson can win games. His last throw in the Green Bay game this past week showed that balls can get away from him, they do from everyone. Minnesota has a quarterback. His name is Jackson.

The referees were blind. Plain and simple. There were at least twelve penalties that should have been called on Green Bay. There were at least five penalties that should have been called on Minnesota. The refs looked like they were on the Packers' payroll. The horse-collar on Chester Taylor, pass interference on a handful of Vikings' receivers, among others. The referees need to check their vision because Minnesota should have won this game.

Jared Allen is still a difference maker. The Pack had to change their plan to accommodate Allen. Yes, they still won. But Allen still made a difference. He showed why the teams in the AFC were all so worried about this guy. He'll get his sacks, you just wait. (By the way I am convinced that Clifton was holding Allen, see paragraph 4.)

The Vikings looked good. The Packers looked good. All of a sudden, the NFC isn't so dominated by the Vikings.
