Joe Burgett's Top 5 College Football Rankings

Joe Burgett Sep 9, 2008

Well I have been asked who I would pick to be in my Top 5 so here we go: I'll start with No. 5 and move up.

No. 5 Alabama

You may be asking why Bama, what have they proven? They proved that defense wins games. In both of their games this year, they have given up really nothing in rushing and held the top running tandem in the nation, in some experts' opinion, to 0 yards rushing.

So give them so props for that.

No. 4 Oklahoma

Now some people may agree with where I placed them. They deserve this spot mainly because they have faced good teams and really haven't proven much other than the fact that they know how to win.

They have a great offense, and that is really what I think will give them the edge and probably lead them to the conference title this year.

No. 3 Florida

Of course, with the reigning Heisman winner Tim Tebow on the team, you can never count out the Gators.

They have proven their offense and defense can secure a conference title and make them the BCS No. 2 by year's end. To win, they have secure that secondary; that's why they are not No. 2 in this poll.

But the team they have to go through this year to get that conference title talked about earlier is this one.

No. 2 Georgia

What can you say about this team? They have proven to me that they are for real, but with a young team I am worried about their chances keeping up.

Their D is pretty good, but their offense led by Moreno at running back and of course the passing game make them a force in the SEC and the nation.

With their SEC schedule, if they stay undefeated they will be No. 1, but not until they face some better teams, and that is going to be the test for them.

No. 1 USC

This team has shown to me every year that they are a real title contender. They play in the PAC-10, so they don't have the stiff competition of the SEC. Their spot at the top looks safe; they can win with anybody.

New QB Marc Sanchez will lead the team, and their running backs are wonderful, so offense is not a worry for them.

The defense is great too. The front line is terrific and those linebackers look for real to me. The secondary is good but needs to improve. Other than that, they look like the team to beat in my opinion.

Some people may ask why Ohio State is not mentioned. Well, they are No. 6 on my poll for a reason. They look inconsistent.

The defense came in this year looking unstoppable, but when the year started they looked terrible. They escaped an upset this past week againsy Ohio, and lost for a while their running back, Heisman hopeful Beanie Wells, to a toe injury.

He'll be back this week, but to me it looks like they will lose to USC this week, so although they are ranked in the BCS at No. 5, they fell down for me. This is my opinion; so what's yours? I'd like to know.
