Michael Vick: Evaluating the QB's Performance Against the Minnesota Vikings

Mike BurkeDec 29, 2010

What a disappointment.

In a game where we thought the Eagles would come in and take care of business, the team was flat and let themselves—and the fans—down.

Eagles' quarterback Michael Vick had arguably his worst performance of the season. He finished the night 25-43 for 263 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception and lost two fumbles. One of the fumbles was returned for a touchdown by Antoine Winfield right before the first half came to a close.

Luckily for Vick, the entire Vikings' secondary had eaten popcorn before the game and could not catch the football. Although he only threw for one interception, he threw many more balls that hit defenders right in the hands and were simply dropped.

In terms of decision making, this was definitely Vick’s worst game. He was under a lot of pressure, but he was trying to force balls and wasn’t throwing very accurate passes. There were some instances where his receivers could have helped him out more, but at the end of the day, his decision making and inaccuracy was lackluster.

He also had some issues protecting the football. This has been something I’ve been worried about for some time now. I love to watch Vick run the ball, but I hate when he dangles it out there. He’s been doing it for his entire career, so it’s hard to change it. However, I’d like to see him be more cautious about how he holds the ball when he’s running.

One thing the Vikings did particularly well was get pressure on Vick. They sent a ton of blitzes and really broke Vick’s comfort zone. Although he has the ability to make plays on the run, we’ve seen Vick have a lot of success when he can sit back in the pocket and go through his reads. The Vikings did not allow him to do this and he struggled.

Vick will really need to go back and watch the film a couple of times. He can’t be happy with the way he played and I’m sure there are many throws he’d like to have back.

After being injured early in the game, Vick stuck it out and didn’t seem to be too harmed. However, he was reportedly limping after the game more so then after any previous game. This could be an indication that we might see Vick in a limited role, if any, against the Cowboys on Sunday.
