Miami Dolphins' Fan To San Francisco 49ers: Don't Buy Into Bill Parcells' Hype

Thomas GaliciaDec 29, 2010

Hello San Francisco, greetings from the other side of the country.

I know you've had a rougher than expected season where expectations weren't met, I can't think of anyone that didn't pick the 49ers to win the NFC West. I know I did.

Now here you stand, with a head coach that was fired with one game left in the season, and you're just praying for the season to come to a quick and painless end.

I know the feeling all too well.

See 49ers fans, our franchises aren't very different.

Much like you guys, we know what its like to have one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game and one of the greatest coaches to ever roam the sidelines.

Unlike you though, we never saw our QB win the big one. In fact one of those years, it was your great quarterback, Joe Montana, that stood in Dan Marino's way.

However for both of us, the days of Marino, Montana, Young, Shula and Walsh are but a memory of the 80's and 90's, much like slap bracelets, New Kids on the Block albums and Britney Spears' sanity.

So now I'm hearing that 49ers owner Jed York is going to talk to Bill Parcells, who on paper is the Miami Dolphins consultant.

I say on paper because back in October, Parcells took his ball and went home with an incomplete in every aspect of his job.

According to the story, York is only talking to Parcells to "evaluate" and ask for his opinion of current 49ers Vice President of Player Personnel, Trent Baalke.

It starts like that, but there are two things that Parcells usually asks for: Power and money.

Since winning two Super Bowls with the Giants from 1980-1990, then a coaching stint with the New England Patriots from 1993-1997, this is how a Bill Parcells regime has gone.

Year one: Drastic improvement, and in the case of the Cowboys and Dolphins, a playoff berth thanks to an easy schedule (it should be noted that both times his teams were one and done).

Year two: A step back as the schedule gets tougher.

Year three: Parcells starts to look disinterested in the job at hand. In Dallas it started with the signing of TO, which he had no power over. In Miami, it was the fact that after an offseason where he acquired Brandon Marshall and Karlos Dansby, he simply up and left in the middle of the season to let his picks for GM and Head Coach; Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano, twist in the wind so to speak.

I'm sure you've noticed that Sparano is currently on the hot seat. Some reports have him coming back, others have him out at the end of the season. However that's nothing more than smoke and mirrors, as it was for the most part Parcells who, to use his term, "purchased the groceries."

The 49ers is an ideal job for Parcells. He's thrived on taking franchises that were floundering, then, through the help of the draft and an easy schedule, manages to temporarily resurrect them, then he's called a savior.

However, after you see that true progress hasn't really been achieved, he's gone, off to the next franchise in need of a turn around.

The 49ers do not need Bill Parcells, the talent is there in every position except for the key position: Quarterback.

Funny thing is, post-Bill Parcells, that's exactly what the Dolphins' problem is.

I know the 49ers need some help, but Bill Parcells isn't the answer. The better idea for the team once called the "Team of the 80's" is to look towards Palo Alto at the young, hungry and fiery head coach who turned Stanford around.

It worked out pretty well the last time that the 49ers looked that way, and there's no reason to believe it won't work out a second time.
